ADC Enhances Soneplex Platform To Facilitate Network High Capacity LAN Access.MINNEAPOLIS--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Dec. 3, 1996-- Enables carriers to provide SOHO Soho (sōhō`, sə–), district of Westminster, London, England, known for its continental restaurants. Once a fashionable quarter, it became popular among writers and artists in the 19th cent. and residential LAN/Internet users with multi-megabit access today without waiting for DSLAM (DSL Access Multiplexor) A central office (CO) device for ADSL service that intermixes voice traffic and DSL traffic onto a customer's DSL line. It also separates incoming phone and data signals and directs them onto the appropriate carrier's network. See DSL. ADC Telecommunications, Inc., today announced that it has enhanced its Soneplex(R) intelligent DS1 service delivery platform to provide high capacity network access across as much as 18,000 feet of single-pair copper wire for the small office home office (SOHO) and residential Internet/LAN access markets. The Soneplex LAN (Local Area Network) A communications network that serves users within a confined geographical area. The "clients" are the user's workstations typically running Windows, although Mac and Linux clients are also used. Extension product is a high bit-rate digital subscriber line (communications, protocol) High bit-rate Digital Subscriber Line - (HDSL) A form of Digital Subscriber Line, providing T1 or E1 connections over two or three twisted-pair copper lines, respectively. (HDSL See DSL. HDSL - High bit-rate Digital Subscriber Line )-based system that offers an immediate and cost-effective alternative to digital subscriber line access multiplexer A Digital Subscriber Line Access Multiplexer (DSLAM) allows telephone lines to make faster connections to the Internet. It is a network device, located near the customer's location, that connects multiple customer Digital Subscriber Lines (DSLs) to a high-speed Internet (DSLAM) technology. The enhanced concentrator provides an Ethernet interface across a symmetrical 384 Kbps and 768 Kbps network connection for approximately $1,500 per subscriber line. According to market forecasts from the Joint Procurement Consortium, the demand for DSLAM and similar products will accelerate from 40,000 to 65,000 lines in 1997 to between 2.9 million and 5 million lines by 2002. "The demand for high bandwidth access to LANs and the Internet by SOHO and residential users is increasing dramatically," said John Griffin, vice president of marketing for ADC's Network Services Division. "In today's competitive telco environment, carriers don't want to wait to implement solutions. ADC's Soneplex platform gives them the opportunity to quickly realize revenue by offering high capacity, point-to-point LAN access, and they can do it without a huge capital investment by simply plugging LAN Extension modules into their currently deployed Soneplex chassis." To facilitate high capacity network access, the Soneplex system offers a 10Base-T Ethernet interface on the network side of the chassis that can interface into a LAN switch or router and an xDSL interface to the subscriber. For the customer premises, the Soneplex platform supports the new PACESETTER(TM) HDSL access router from ADC (1) See A/D converter. (2) (Apple Display Connector) A peripheral connector from Apple that combines digital video display, USB and power in one cable. Kentrox. The PACESETTER HDSL access router's integrated 10Base-T interface provides small and home offices with access to the network through menu-based configuration software. The Soneplex chassis, located at the central office, provides all of the networking access options. The Soneplex platform fits within the standard 19" or 23" mechanical outline used for all central office rack configurations and can handle up to 56 single-pair HDSL interfaces. The LAN Extension modules will support SNMP (Simple Network Management Protocol) A widely used network monitoring and control protocol. Data are passed from SNMP agents, which are hardware and/or software processes reporting activity in each network device (hub, router, bridge, etc. management (MIB-II MIB-II Management Information Base for Network Management of TCP/IP-Based Internets , enterprise MIB (1) (Management Information Base) The hierarchical database used by the simple network management protocol (SNMP) to describe the particular device being monitored. MIB objects are identified using ASN.1 syntax. See SNMP, RMON, OID and ASN.1. ) for Trap, Get and Set commands. A craft interface on the LAN Extension module supports local access. Telnet access is also provided to emulate a direct client/server connection for remote elements. Future management capabilities using the Soneplex main processor unit (MPU) will provide remote operations, administration, maintenance and provisioning features for intelligent service delivery. The enhanced Soneplex LAN Extension product currently is available for customer trials; general availability is planned for first quarter 1997.
