ADC Announces Beta Customer for the Cellworx STN.

MINNEAPOLIS--(BUSINESS WIRE)--June 9, 1998--ADC Telecommunications, Inc. (NASDAQ NASDAQ

: ADCT ADCT Adaptive Discrete Cosine Transform ; www.adc.com) announced today that the Cellworx service transport node (STN (SuperTwisted Nematic) A passive matrix LCD technology that provides better contrast than twisted nematic (TN) by twisting the molecules from 180 to 270 degrees. See DSTN. ) has been shipped to the Iowa Communications Network The Iowa Communications Network (ICN) is a state-administered fiber optics network designed to provide equal access to Iowans with modern telecommunication resources.  (ICN ICN International Council of Nurses. ) for beta testing in its fiber-optic network.

The Cellworx STN, based upon Bellcore's GR-2837 requirements, is the industry's first network element that combines SONET and asynchronous transfer mode See ATM.

) and private-line circuit emulation. The Cellworx STN collapses multiple high-speed services on a single network layer and manages these services through a simple integrated network manager.

In contrast to the SONET time division multiplexing (communications) time division multiplexing - (TDM) A type of multiplexing where two or more channels of information are transmitted over the same link by allocating a different time interval ("slot" or "slice") for the transmission of each channel. I.e.  (TDM (Time Division Multiplexing) A technology that transmits multiple signals simultaneously over a single transmission path. Each lower-speed signal is time sliced into one high-speed transmission. ) time slot -- which typically is 70 percent empty when transporting data -- ATM VP over SONET enables carriers to fully utilize the bandwidth of a connection by creating "virtual paths" defined by the amount of bandwidth needed for a particular service. The elimination of fixed TDM time slots improves the overall bandwidth utilization on the ring. Carriers and service providers now have an efficient and cost-effective backhaul transport to a broadband switch or other destination.

The initial deployment in the ICN will incorporate the Cellworx STN to connect legacy services at various state government buildings in Des Moines with native ATM cell relay service. The ICN expects to upgrade its frame relay and voice or private line services in the near future. Because the Cellworx STN offers multiple services on a single platform, carriers can add new high-speed services without capital-intensive backbone upgrades. The Cellworx STN enables these upgrades with a simple addition of service access plug-in cards in the chassis.

"As the data, voice and video needs of the ICN increase and expand, the Cellworx STN will offer significant, long-term capital savings due to it's inherent scalability and flexibility," said Karl Rookstool, vice president of marketing for ADC's ATM Transport Group.

The Iowa Communications Network (ICN) is the nation's largest statewide, two-way, full motion (DS-3), interactive, fiber-optic network. The network reaches every county in the state to provide access to geographically distant resources such as education and training. The ICN infrastructure provides data, voice, and video services to authorized users.

Public and private school districts and institutions of higher education, public libraries and education agencies are authorized to use the network to distribute educational information and resources to remote locations. In addition, state and federal agencies and courts have access to the network, while hospitals and physician clinics may use the ICN for telemedicine applications.
