The Soneplex AM system enables the university to upgrade its private campus network to synchronous digital hierarchy (communications, standard) Synchronous Digital Hierarchy - (SDH) An international digital telecommunications network hierarchy which standardises transmission around the bit rate of 51.84 megabits per second, which is also called STS-1.  (SDH) to combine asynchronous transfer mode See ATM.

As the second largest Chinese telecommunications network A telecommunications network is a of telecommunications links and nodes arranged so that messages may be passed from one part of the network to another over multiple links and through various nodes. , the national railway system trains hundreds of students from provincial railway system organizations each year. The Lan Zhou Railway University is where railway personnel, including telecommunications engineers, are trained for this booming industry. The university, like the entire railway system, has maintained separate private networks for voice and data. One network offers voice communications while the data network is used to monitor the railways, control switching and send ticketing information. The Soneplex AM system merges these two networks with nodes that combine and terminate E1/E3 voice and data traffic from the ATM network.

The Soneplex AM system uses advanced SDH technology to deliver services at lower cost and with higher reliability than conventional multiplexers. While optimized for the low tributary counts found in private networks, the Soneplex AM system offers low-cost, single-stage SDH multiplexing with more capacity than standard point-to-point multiplexers.

"The Soneplex AM system was the perfect all-encompassing fit for our network needs," said Gao Pu, Director of Equipment Division for the Lan Zhou Railway University. "Since we didn't need many E1 ports, it was extremely cost-effective, and we can upgrade to STM-4 in the future without service interruption."

Because of the size of the university and railway networks, one critical factor for the selection of the Soneplex AM system was its central management system. Using a graphical user interface graphical user interface (GUI)

If a problem occurs in the network, the management system automatically pages the responsible technician or network operator by using the local telecommunications paging network. Information sent to the pager carried by the technician includes severity and type of fault as well as the location.

"The Soneplex AM system is allowing the Lan Zhou University to use a low-cost, standards-based approach to provide high bandwidth services more reliably and cost-effectively than ever before," said Sean Martin, vice president of marketing for ADC's Loop Transport division. "With this deployment, ADC is extending its T1/E1 expertise further into international markets."
