Clark was unhappy about some strike calls made by home-plate umpire Mark Hirschbeck, particularly in Eric Karros' at-bat with the bases loaded and one out. Karros wound up grounding into a double play.

Clark was ejected after arguing from the dugout, stepped onto the playing field to argue with Hirschbeck and then kicked dirt on home plate, which Dodgers catcher Paul Lo Duca Paul Anthony Lo Duca (born April 12, 1972 in Brooklyn, New York) is a catcher in Major League Baseball who plays for the New York Mets. He then threw a pair of bats on the field.

``There were some bad calls, terrible calls, you know,'' Clark said. ``So if anybody's going to get kicked out, it's better if I get kicked out than (players). And I know watching on TV in here, it looked like he got a little bit better.''

Hirschbeck, who said he will file a report with Frank Robinson, vice president of on-field operations for baseball, added he believed Clark threw the cap at him.

``It hit my right in the belly, square,'' Hirschbeck said. ``He looked right at me. I just saw it on the tape. It got me right there (his belly). Bam. Then he threw the two bats, and you saw the rest.''
