AD LEADS TO DISCOVERY OF MISSING N.Y. BOY.

GLENDALE - A 5-year-old Brighton, N.Y., boy reported missing five months ago was located Friday at a Glendale homeless shelter Homeless shelters are temporary residences for homeless people. Usually located in urban neighborhoods, they are similar to emergency shelters. The primary difference is that homeless shelters are usually open to anyone, without regard to the reason for need.  after a woman spotted the boy's picture in a newspaper advertisement about missing children.

The apparent victim of a custody dispute, Alexander had been missing since Sept. 3, Young said.

His recovery emphasizes how important it is for residents to pay attention to photos of missing kids, said officials with the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children The National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC) is a private, non-profit organization established in the United States in 1984 under United States government mandate. . The center provided Alexander's photo for the ad.

``These parents of missing kids are really relying on the public for their help,'' spokeswoman Julie Cartwright said. ``We're hoping the public will treat (the photos) seriously and always take the time to look.''

One of every six children whose pictures are published is eventually recognized and recovered, she said.

Alexander was taken into protective custody An arrangement whereby a person is safeguarded by law enforcement authorities in a location other than the person's home because his or her safety is seriously threatened.  Saturday by the county Department of Children and Family Services, according to Young.

His mother, Madina Riley, flew to Los Angeles this weekend to see her son. Officials will hold a court hearing today to determine whether to release Alexander to her, Young said.

Young said the father was in custody, but the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office had not yet decided whether to file charges against him, officials said.

The Monroe County District Attorney's Office has already decided it won't extradite ex·tra·dite

That order was not into effect when he left.''

Alexander's parents had separated and were apparently sharing custody when the father picked the boy up from a baby sitter and ``just kind of disappeared,'' according to Brighton police Sgt. John Mallaber.
