AD BREAK; remember WHEN?

Byline: David Powell

THE Green Cross Code was a handy way for children to learn how to cross the road from 1975. It was promoted by a superhero character played by British actor David Prowse MBE, a bodybuilder and former Mr Universe.

The 6ft 6ins tall performer also played Darth Vader in the Star Wars films - although James Earl Jones provided a deeper voice.

Prowse's Green Cross Code character was used in government public information films from 1975 to 1990.

Remember his slogan?

"I won't be there when you cross the road. So always use the Green Cross Code"
