``I am pleased to have been part of this tremendous community effort to preserve this special place,'' said Douglas in a written statement.

The San Francisco-based Trust for Public Land plans to donate the 70-acre coastal bluff to Santa Barbara for a preserve in the next several weeks.

``Without the Douglas family's generous support, this acquisition would not have been possible,'' said Margaret Eadington, the Trust for Public Land's project manager.

The property will be renamed the Douglas Family Preserve The Douglas Family Preserve is a public park in Santa Barbara, California. For more than 20 years, many Santa Barbara residents have sought protection for the coastal bluff, but two bond measures to purchase the property failed to win voter approval.

In 1995, the Trust for Public Land secured an option to buy the property for about $3.5 million if the funds were raised or pledged by a deadline earlier this year.

Six thousand checks and pledges were received and were combined with a $1 million County Coastal Resources Enhancement Fund grant to make the acquisition.

Douglas donated the final amount needed for the $3.5 million goal in honor of the 80th birthday of his father, Kirk Douglas.
