Hamilton, a successful investment adviser who founded her own consulting firm, was also known for being a champion of women's rights The effort to secure equal rights for women and to remove gender discrimination from laws, institutions, and behavioral patterns.

The women's rights movement began in the nineteenth century with the demand by some women reformers for the right to vote, known as suffrage, and
, financial independence and access to education.

``She - out of the whole history of Glendale - was probably the one woman who has done the most to promote women's rights to make sure they have access to education as well as economic opportunities,'' said college trustee Victor King.

She served on the boards of the Glendale Chamber of Commerce, Glendale Memorial Hospital, Glendale Adventist Medical Center Glendale Adventist Medical Center is located in the Los Angeles suburb of Glendale, California. Nat B. Read, Hamilton's former husband, said his ex-wife modeled herself after her father's community activism.

``That was the example she had grown up with - that one gives back to the community,'' he said. ``While other women resist the label of feminist, she was very proud of it.''

Judee Kendall, executive vice president of the Glendale Chamber of Commerce, said Hamilton commanded others' respect by her low-key leadership style. ``When she spoke, she said what she thought. She did it gracefully and thoughtfully,'' she said.

Hamilton is survived by her sons, Hudson Bair, a San Francisco attorney, and John Bair, a Northern California reclamation ecologist, and two grandchildren.

Before her death, Hamilton worked with the college to establish a scholarship fund to benefit women who overcame obstacles to return to college.

A memorial service for Hamilton will be held at 3 p.m. Feb. 13 at the Glendale College auditorium.
