ACTIVIST GROUP FORMS TO OPPOSE CONCRETE COMPANY'S PROPOSAL.

SANTA CLARITA Santa Clarita, city (1990 pop. 110,642), Los Angeles co., S Calif., suburb 30 mi (48 km) NW of downtown Los Angeles, on the Santa Clara River; inc. 1987. Situated in the Santa Clara valley and nearby canyons, Santa Clarita includes the former towns of Canyon Country,  - Opponents to the proposed Transit Mixed Concrete mining project have united as SAFE - Safe Action for the Environment - an organization of seasoned activists.

The membership overlaps that of other local environmental groups - the Santa Clarita Organization for Planning the Environment, Landfill Alternatives Saves Environmental Resources and the Canyons Preservation Committee.

Noted environmental attorney Carlyle Hall, who helped engineer Los Angeles Los Angeles (lôs ăn`jələs, lŏs, ăn`jəlēz'), city (1990 pop. 3,485,398), seat of Los Angeles co., S Calif.; inc. 1850.  County's court-ordered Development Monitoring System, will work with SAFE, board member Allan Cameron said Wednesday.

Cameron, a founder of SCOPE, said that organization deals with development and planning issues while SAFE was formed specifically to combat TMC's plan to mine 83 million tons of sand and gravel in Soledad Canyon over 20 years.

Proponents maintain that the projects would supply an inexpensive source of construction materials for Santa Clarita Valley The Santa Clarita Valley is the valley of the Santa Clara River in Southern California. It stretches through Los Angeles County and Ventura County. Its main population center is the city of Santa Clarita. The valley was part of the 48,612-acre (19,672.  building projects, thus keeping costs down.

Opponents say the mining would cause environmental problems, particularly air pollution and damage to the Santa Clara River Santa Clara River may refer to:
