ACTIVIST, CHP RETIREE J. J. O'BRIEN DIES AT 76.

 Lt. John J. O'Brien, active for decades in Santa Clarita community affairs, died over the weekend. He was 76.

O'Brien -- known as J.J. -- retired in 1984 from the CHP's Newhall office in the same region where he had worked as a rookie in 1956.

He was active in the incorporation of Santa Clarita as a city and served on a citizen transportation committee that predated cityhood. O'Brien also taught traffic school and other courses at College of the Canyons College of the Canyons is one of the fastest-growing community colleges in the state. According to the National Junior College Research Association, College of the Canyons consistently ranks in the top 50 community colleges in the nation. .

Friends and co-workers recalled him Monday as jovial (Jules' Own Version of the International Algebraic Language) An ALGOL-like programming language developed by Systems Development Corp. in the early 1960s and widely used in the military. Its key architect was Jules Schwartz.  and rarely at a loss for words.

``He was a great guy,'' retired Officer Harry Ingold said. ``He was very active in the community, a really good guy.''

O'Brien, a longtime Saugus resident, applied last year for a vacancy on the College of the Canyons board, but was not appointed. In failing health, he recently moved in with a daughter in Camarillo.

O'Brien held assignments in Northern California Northern California, sometimes referred to as NorCal, is the northern portion of the U.S. state of California. The region contains the San Francisco Bay Area, the state capital, Sacramento; as well as the substantial natural beauty of the redwood forests, the northern  before returning to the local station in 1968. He was one of the last local motorcycle officers here before that detail vanished for about 25 years. It was re-instituted locally two years ago.

O'Brien, whose wife died before him, is survived by his four grown children.

The term, applied also to the beads, is extended to Muslim, Hindu, and Buddhist prayers that use beads.  will be recited at 7 p.m. Thursday at Eternal Valley Memorial Park in Newhall. The funeral is scheduled for 11 a.m. Friday at St. Clare Catholic Church in Canyon Country before interment at Eternal Valley.
