ACTIONS SPEAK LOUDER THAN...

TWO world champions are the faces of success helping Rhondda Cynon Taf's celebration of European Year of Disabled People.

Former world and European featherweight boxing champion Barry McGuigan and Pontypridd's Emma Brown, currently the world and paralympic champion powerlifter, were the special guest speakers at a special event on Friday.

They tackled the issue of overcoming barriers at the Actions Speak Louder than Words conference at the Michael Sobell Centre, Aberdare.

Emma, pictured, eclipsed her own world record at the Sydney Paralympics to take gold in the 82.5 kilos women's event with a lift of 135 kilos.

Irishman McGuigan, now a regular TV boxing expert, is president and founder of the Professional Boxers' Association. A former holder of both the World Boxer of the Year and BBC Sports Personality of the Year The BBC Sports Personality of the Year award is given to one sportsman or sportswoman, usually British, every year. The award was originally devised by the BBC producer Paul Fox in 1954 and continues to be organised annually by the BBC.  titles, he was awarded the MBE MBE (in Britain) Member of the Order of the British Empire

The conference was designed to bring together a wide cross-section of people on both a local and national level with an interest in disability issues.

Council leader Pauline Jarman gave the opening address and the initiatives and progress since the 2001 inaugural conference were highlighted by Kim Ryley, the chief executive.
