ACTION SPORTS: IT'S LONG RIDE FROM CAROLINA.

Byline: Thomas St. Myer Staff Writer

POMONA - Guess which city is the hotbed hotbed, low, glass-covered frame structure for starting tender plants. It differs from a cold frame only in that the soil is heated—either artificially as by underground electric wiring or steampipes, or naturally with partially fermented stable manure, which  for BMX BMX

 Championships live in Greenville, N.C.

Allan Cooke, Jeremy Fanberg, Josh Harrington, Mike Laird, Dave Mirra, Ryan Nyquist and Scott Wirch will ride this afternoon in the preliminaries for a shot at tonight's finals of the U.S. Championships at Fairplex.

``You can have a good living in BMX there," Cooke said about Greenville (pop. 61,113).

Cooke's house features a 3,500-square foot ramp in the backyard that attracts fellow BMX riders. After hours of perfecting the latest tricks at his house, they can party together at East Carolina University East Carolina University is a public, coeducational, intensive research university located in Greenville, North Carolina, United States. Fanatical about their sport, the seven riders rarely sit. When together, they inevitably grab their bikes and take off for the nearest course.

``You get to ride with people doing the same thing and we're like a big family,'' said Fanberg, 24, who qualified for the championships as a wild card.

Fanberg, 5-foot-9, 150 pounds, with a buzz cut and scruffy facial hair, Fanberg looks like a typical rider.

Cooke looks the opposite of Fanberg - clean-cut, standing 5-10 and a solid 160 pounds. But his looks conceal the daredevil personality he inherited from his father, Jim, who made a living as a factory Kawasaki Moto-X rider.

An upstart in BMX with a creative imagination, Cooke could challenge Mirra and Nyquist for the best rider to come out of Greenville.

Mirra, a 20-time X-Games medalist with 12 of those gold, shines in the spotlight. The 29-year-old Mirra has cashed in on his celebrity status with a documentary movie, the Dave Mirra Super Park Tour and Dave Mirra Freestyle BMX Dave Mirra Freestyle BMX is a video game released in 2000 featuring Dave Mirra and other professional BMX riders. Nyquist has challenged Mirra for supremacy with his 16 X-Games and Gravity Games medals. Nyquist also has signed with Adidas as a sponsor.

As for Cooke, he recently signed a sponsorship with Mountain Dew and probably will rival his Greenville colleagues for endorsement dollars.

``Financially, you've got to understand money is coming in, but it's not going to last forever,'' Cooke said.
