"Companies with two to 50 sites in countries depending on satellite communications previously could not take advantage of the cost and bandwidth efficiencies inherent in frame relay. With SkyFrame, ACT Networks, the pioneer in voice-over frame relay, has made integrated frame relay a truly global technology."

SkyFrame: Technology with Global Benefits

SkyFrame is a high-performance, integrated solution for corporate networks and supports a full range of network topologies from point-to-point to mesh configurations. SkyFrame features frame relay packetizing and virtual frame relay switching; toll quality voice compression; LAN/WAN LAN/WAN Local Area Network/Wide Area Network  connectivity; public frame relay service access; and an integrated, full-featured network management system (NMS See NetWare Management System. ). The Window-based NMS controls ACT's frame relay access equipment and third-party RF equipment in a single system.

When compared with conventional satellite networking systems, SkyFrame excels in numerous areas, including:

Hubless -- Satellite hubs represent the single largest expense in a mesh satellite network. For example, a company may spend approximately $500,000 on a 20-site network and incur an additional $800,000 or more in hub costs. SkyFrame eliminates the need for this additional expenditure.

Switchless -- By distributing intelligence to all connected sites, SkyFrame reduces the complexity of network designs. Its virtual switching systems allow network managers to add connections by simply adding demodulator See demodulate.

cards. Networks can be updated, expanded and reconfigured quickly, easily and inexpensively.

Single Carrier Frequency -- Each SkyFrame earth station utilizes a single transmit frequency, ensuring optimal use of power amplifiers, minimizing the cost of RF equipment.

Voice, Data, Fax Integration -- SkyFrame provides an integrated multimedia enterprise networking solution with maximum efficiency and transmission quality. This eliminates performance issues associated with networks optimized only for voice or data.

Advanced Voice Compression Technology -- SkyFrame ensures the most efficient use of satellite bandwidth by allowing the transmission of very low bit rate voice signals. SkyFrame provides compressed voice as low as 4.8Kbps and offer 8Kbps voice with quality superior to that of 32Kbps ADPCM (Adaptive Differential PCM) A widely used variation of PCM that codes the difference between sample points like differential PCM (DPCM), but can also dynamically switch the coding scale to compensate for variations in amplitude and frequency. .

"Using frame relay, SkyFrame offers a cost-effective solution for consolidating multiple applications over satellite communications," said Curtis Price, research manager at International Data Corp. "By utilizing both satellite and hybrid networks, developing countries will be able to implement the types of communications systems needed for national and international business operations."

Pricing and Availability

The SkyFrame system is composed of ACT's customer-proven SDM-FP and SDM-JFP integrated frame relay access devices (IFRADS) equipped with an integral satellite modulator Modulator

card, integral satellite demodulator/filter cards and the ACTview Network Management System.

A typical configuration which includes an SDM-FP with two voice channels and one multiport LAN card is priced at $25,000. The modulator/filter card lists for $3,600, each demodulator card lists for $3,600 and the Network Management System lists for $1,500.

ACT Networks develops, manufactures and markets integrated wide-area network access products which use frame relay and time division multiplexing (communications) time division multiplexing - (TDM) A type of multiplexing where two or more channels of information are transmitted over the same link by allocating a different time interval ("slot" or "slice") for the transmission of each channel. I.e.  and which support a broad range of end-user network applications. The company's products incorporate advanced voice and data compression algorithms, voice and data access switching capabilities and proprietary voice, data and facsimile integration technologies.

The company's products are designed to work with either terrestrial media or wireless media. Organizations worldwide use the company's products to build cost-effective, bandwidth-efficient, easy-to-manage wide-area networks.
