ACT Networks Inc. announces enhanced data handling and toll-quality compressed voice at ComNet '95.

CAMARILLO, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Jan. 24, 1995--ACT Networks Inc. Tuesday announced the introduction of two new cards: the DSM-03 Data Services Module, featuring frame relay A high-speed packet switching protocol used in wide area networks (WANs). Providing a granular service of up to DS3 speed (45 Mbps), it has become popular for LAN to LAN connections across remote distances, and services are offered by most major carriers.  switching via three high- speed data expansion ports, and the VFC-03 Voice/Fax Card, featuring toll-quality voice compression Same as speech compression.  at 8 Kbps.

"Frame relay switching and high-speed expansion ports, along with true toll-quality voice at 8 Kbps, gives small and medium-size companies real enterprise networking The networking infrastructure in a large enterprise with multiple computer systems and networks of different types is extraordinarily complex. Due to the myriad of interfaces that are required, much of what goes on has little to do with the real data processing of the payroll and orders.  capability," said Martin Shum, ACT's founder, president and chief executive officer.

The optional DSM-03 adds frame relay switching capability to the SDM-FP and SDM-JFP integrated frame relay access devices (FRAD (Frame Relay Access Device or Frame Relay Assembler Disassembler) A communications device that formats outgoing data into the format required by a frame relay network. It strips the data back out at the other end. ). This allows users to build private frame relay networks of up to four sites without buying expensive standalone frame relay switches.

Supporting data rates up to 512 Kbps, the DSM-03 is also ideal for desktop video conferencing, efficient bridge and router access and other bandwidth-intensive applications. Available for order now, the DSM-03 is priced at $1,800 with a standard RS-232 interface and three-port cable. , supplying V.11, V.35 and RS-449 connections, is $200.

The VFC-03 voice/fax card installs in both the SDM-FP and SDM-JFP frame rely products and the SDM-T and SDM-JT point-to-point integrated multiplexers. The VFC-03 provides toll-quality compressed voice at 8 Kbps through an advanced ACELP ACELP Algebraic Code-Excited Linear Prediction

The VFC-03 is priced at $1,200. Both the DSM-03 and the VFC-03 will be demonstrated at ComNet `95.

"These products will accelerate the move away from proprietary limited connectivity and acceptable voice quality offered by other data/voice integrators to full standards-compliant networking and exceptional toll-quality voice offered by ACT," added John Reidy, ACT's director of market development.
