ACT's SDM-FP Receives Data Communication Magazine's "Top Performers" Award in First Open Independent Test.

CAMARILLO, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sept. 27, 1996--ACT Networks, Inc. (NASDAQ NASDAQ
in full National Association of Securities Dealers Automated Quotations

U.S. market for over-the-counter securities. Established in 1971 by the National Association of Securities Dealers (NASD), NASDAQ is an automated quotation system that reports on
: ANET) today announced that its SDM-FP integrated frame relay access device (communications) Frame Relay Access Device - (FRAD) Hardware and software that turns packets from TCP, SNA, IPX, etc into frames that can be sent over a Frame Relay wide area network.  has been selected as one of two Top Performers by Data Communication Magazine from among nine competing products offering voice-over-frame relay capability.

Data Communications data communications, application of telecommunications technology to the problem of transmitting data, especially to, from, or between computers. In popular usage, it is said that data communications make it possible for one computer to "talk" with another.  Magazine teamed up with National Software Testing Laboratories National Software Testing Laboratories, or NSTL, is an American company, established in 1983, which tests computer hardware and software. The company provides certification (such as WHQL and Microsoft Windows Mobile certification), quality assurance, and benchmarking  to conduct the industry's first open independent voice-over-frame relay equipment evaluation. CD-quality audio samples were played through FRADS from nine different vendors and 12 impartial jurors were asked to rate what they heard. Results of this evaluation have now been published in the September issue of Data Communications Magazine. Based on the test criteria, the Tester's Choice awards went to ACT Networks' SDM-FP and one other vendor's product.

Data Communications Magazine (Data Communications, Sept. 1, 1996) commented, "Frame Relay A high-speed packet switching protocol used in wide area networks (WANs). Providing a granular service of up to DS3 speed (45 Mbps), it has become popular for LAN to LAN connections across remote distances, and services are offered by most major carriers.  has proven itself as a bandwidth-efficient, cost-effective data mover Also called a "storage router," it is a device in a backup system that manages the transfer of data to the backup storage. See LAN free backup. , so it makes sense to apply the same benefits to voice, right?... But if voice is going to ride for free on the frame relay network, then net managers need to know it's going to, well, sound good."

"There are three things to recommend ACT Networks' SDM-FP," stated the report. "It ranked among the leaders in audio quality, especially when handling voice at 8 Kbps per channel, and it fared well when squeezing voice into 4.8 Kbps per channel. Also, it is the only product tested that can be configured entirely through front-panel buttons and an LCD display -- which frees weary net managers from having to learn yet another set of command-line instructions."

This award comes on the heel of recent announcements by various domestic telecommunications carriers of their intentions to offer voice-over-frame relay services (Network World - Sept. 23, 1996).

"As voice-over-frame relay applications pick up momentum, an impartial evaluation such as this helps net managers unfamiliar with compressed, packetized voice technology make their purchase decisions," commented Martin Shum, president and CEO (1) (Chief Executive Officer) The highest individual in command of an organization. Typically the president of the company, the CEO reports to the Chairman of the Board.  of ACT Networks. "We are pleased to receive this award, which is a strong testament to the strength of ACT's voice quality.

"In addition to the highest quality voice, ACT offers a wide range of advanced performance capabilities, including full mesh connectivity, support of a broad range of telephony interfaces, advanced dialing capability, call accounting, sophisticated and proactive congestion The condition of a network when there is not enough bandwidth to support the current traffic load.

 support.

"All of these capabilities are necessary to offer complete voice functionality over a frame relay network. Net managers need to make sure that the product of their choice is capable of delivering these features to derive the full benefits of this exciting technology."
