, an L-3 Communications & Thales Company, introduces SafeRoute(TM), a suite of ADS-B ADS-B Automatic Dependent Surveillance - Broadcast  (Automatic Dependent Surveillance-Broadcast Automatic dependent surveillance-broadcast (ADS-B) is a function on a properly equipped aircraft or surface vehicle that periodically broadcasts its state vector (horizontal and vertical position, horizontal and vertical velocity) and other information. ) software solutions designed to improve safety and efficiency for flight operators in the airport environment. Working with UPS, the world's largest package delivery company and ninth largest airline with 268 aircraft, the new ACSS system will provide advanced capabilities in the areas of Surface Area Movement Management (SAMM SAMM Security Assistance Management Manual

"As a leader in aviation safety solutions, we're excited about this new product development with UPS," said ACSS President Kris Ganase. "SafeRoute is platform-independent software that provides customers with a high degree of flexibility. Customers can choose to install the initial set of SafeRoute functions or any combination of SAMM and Merging & Spacing capabilities. It can be installed as part of an ACSS platform - such as T2CAS T2CAS Terrain and Traffic Collision Avoidance System (avionics) , TCAS 3000, or TCAS 2000 - or hosted within another supplier's product."

The Merging & Spacing functions make use of on-board aircraft surveillance and Class III Electronic Flight Bag Electronic Flight Bag (EFB) is an electronic information management device that helps flight crews perform flight management tasks more easily and efficiently with less paper.  (EFB) display to provide flight deck spacing commands that allow aircraft to follow one another at the safest, most efficient interval possible from cruise altitude to the runway. These applications ensure more consistent aircraft spacing while increasing capacity and efficiency within the terminal airspace.

"By installing SafeRoute's Merging & Spacing capabilities on UPS aircraft, we enable Continuous Descent Arrivals (CDAs)," said Capt. Karen Lee, UPS Director of Flight Operations. "Successful trials with CDAs flown last fall show the potential to achieve a 30 percent reduction in noise and three percent reduction in emissions. We also expect significant fuel savings from keeping our planes at higher altitudes longer and being able to get our planes on the ground faster."

The SAMM application provides flight crews with an airport surface map and tracks the movements of their aircraft and other ground and airborne traffic in the terminal area, and alerts crews of potential conflicts. The SAMM module within SafeRoute delivers enhanced situational awareness by using aircraft onboard surveillance technology. It uses ADS-B, TIS-B TIS-B Traffic Information Service Broadcast  (Traffic Information Service-Broadcast) and the EFB to display airport runways/taxiways and reduce the possibility of runway incursions.
