WHERE ARE THE WOMEN?: Silicon Valley has earned a dubious distinction: It is now home to more unattached men than any other major metropolitan area. As of October, there were 5,372 more single men than women ages 20 to 45 in Santa Clara Santa Clara, city, Cuba

County. Anchorage, Alaska, where 52 percent of the population is male, still has the largest guy surplus in percentage terms.

But Santa Clara County, the heart of Silicon Valley, is 50.4 percent male, which means it reigns in sheer numbers of available bachelors. Silicon Valley's high-tech female workers also might contribute to the date deficit. Many make such good incomes that their standards, too, are higher. ``I want somebody that has a good income and lives in a nice house, an entrepreneur,'' said Mindy Atwal, a mortgage broker who makes nearly $100,000 annually herself and would like to find someone who earns more. ``Otherwise, why bother with a man? I can be single and happy.''

SITE OF THE WEEK

HACK ATTACK (jargon) hack attack - (Possibly by analogy with "Big Mac Attack" from advertisements for the McDonald's fast-food chain; the variant "big hack attack" is reported) Nearly synonymous with hacking run, though the latter more strongly implies an all-nighter. : Scores of commercial and government Web sites were invaded by hackers recently, including sites run by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), civilian agency of the U.S. federal government with the mission of conducting research and developing operational programs in the areas of space exploration, artificial satellites (see satellite, artificial),  and the Army base at Fort Monmouth, N.J. So, what else is new? The hacking or - as hackers themselves call it - ``owning'' of Web sites has become commonplace.

Despite stern U.S. laws against tampering with communications systems and computer networks, there seems to be little that law enforcement can do to stop it. Want to know the latest victim? Surf over to www.attrition.org, a Web site that displays what it says is a verified list of Web sites that have been hacked. There are nearly 1,300 listed so far this year, and their frequency is steadily increasing.
