ACRI AND CRAY RESEARCH ANNOUNCE SOFTWARE DEVELOPMENT AGREEMENT FOR PARALLEL COMPUTER SYSTEMS

EAGAN, Minn., April 26 /PRNewswire/ -- Advanced Computer Research International S.A. (ACRI), Paris, and Cray Research, Inc. (NYSE: CYR) today announced an agreement to develop Fortran-90 compilers and software applications for use on parallel computer systems.
Under the agreement, Belgian-based ACSET, which develops compilers for ACRI, will use Cray Research's advanced Fortran-90 front-end technology to create and market standard, fully Cray-compatible compilers for ACRI and other European computer manufacturers. Cray Research will assume an equity position in ACSET.
ACRI and Cray Research will also collaborate to port and optimize applications codes on both firms' parallel computer systems.
"This first investment in a European enterprise demonstrates Cray Research's intent to forge European alliances that reflect the importance of the European supercomputing market and the existing skills of companies based in that market," said Robert Levy, Cray Research's vice president, European sales and development.
Jacques Stern, ACRI's Chairman, adds that this agreement recognizes the high value of ACRI's team and present achievements; it will facilitate the introduction and utilization of ACRI systems in the sophisticated high peformance computing market.
ACRI was founded in 1989 by Jacques Stern to develop a new generation of European high-performance computer systems for the scientific, technical and engineering markets. An international team of experienced engineers has been built up in Lyon to design and bring to market a family of state-of-the-art parallel systems with the highest price/performance ratio.
ACSET was founded in Louvain-la-Neuve, Belgium, on ACRI's initiative, to develop and market compilers for parallel computers, along with parallelization and optimization software engineering tools. A highly skilled group of compiler and software engineering tools experts from the former Philips Research Center form the kernel of ACSET's staff.
Cray Research creates the most powerful, highest-quality computational tools for solving the world's most challenging scientific and industrial problems.
