Xylan shares rose $1.062, or 4.4 percent, to close at $25.437 after analysts said Xylan or Santa Clara-based competitor Bay Networks Inc. would be a likely acquisition for Europe's biggest telecommunications equipment maker. Additionally, Bancamerica Robertson Stephens analyst Paul Johnson Paul Johnson may refer to:

issued a ``buy'' recommendation on Xylan.

Alcatel raised approximately $2 billion last year after selling off part of its interest in an engineering venture, and analysts say they expect the company to spend some of the money expanding its telecommunications business.

Alcatel already owns 7 percent of Xylan, which makes local area network switching equipment, and distributes the company's products internationally.

Xylan spokesman Douglas Hill Douglas Arthur Hill (April 6, 1935 to June 21, 2007) was a Canadian science fiction author, editor and reviewer. He was born in Brandon, Manitoba, the son of a train driver, and raised in Prince Albert, Saskatchewan.  said that for the right price Xylan would be happy to consider an offer.

``It's kind of like anything else,'' Hill said. ``If some guy walked up to you and offered you $50,000 for your house, you might be insulted. But if he offered you $2 million . . . you'd probably throw your arms around him.''
