ACPE network news.

New ACPE Online Networks:

* Regional networks in Albuquerque and Upstate New York are open to any physician executives interested in joining, including non-ACPE members.

* Two new topical networks are up and running. Past participants of Financial Decision Making and similar courses can further explore issues in the financing of health care on ACPE's new Health Care Finance network. The Palliative Care network provides a forum for discussion around implementation and management of palliative care programs in hospitals, but also in the community setting.

* Positional networks for MMM Alumni and physician executives working in the pharmaceutical industry are also available for ACPE members.

Children's Hospital Network

Randy Hock, MD, MMM now leads ACPE's Children's Hospital Physician Leaders network. Hock, director and founder of the Children's Center for Cancer and Blood Diseases and director of the Pediatric Hospice Program at St. Vincent Children's Hospital, sees the forum as a place for those physician executives who serve children to compare notes, help one another and learn about what's going on across the country. Many thanks go to Steve Lazoritz, MD, FACPE, CPE for starting the network and providing his advice, encouragement, insight and leadership for the past two years.

South Florida Network

Carmen Steigman presented a groundbreaking approach to the national medical malpractice problem at the January 14th meeting of ACPE's South Florida network. In "Fog and Friction: A Clausewitzian Perspective on Why Physicians are Losing the Malpractice War," Steigman applied Prussian military philosopher Carl von Clausewitz' theories on war to the current malpractice climate, identifying self-sabotaging attitudes and behaviors as well as ways physicians may become more effective in dealing with their adversaries. Kudos to South Florida network leader Keith Wintermeyer, MD, for organizing an event attendees described as brilliant, thoroughly enjoyable, well-chosen and well-delivered.
