ACME UNITED REPORTS THIRD QUARTER EARNINGS
FAIRFIELD, Conn., Oct. 27 /PRNewswire/ -- Acme United Corporation

(AMEX: ACU) today reported net income of $224,826, or 7 cents per share, for the third quarter of 1992. This compares to net income of $407,852, or 13 cents per share, for the third quarter of 1991.
Net sales were $14,522,950 for the third quarter of 1992, compared to net sales of $12,087,863 for the third quarter of 1991.
For the nine months of 1992, net income was $428,678, or 13 cents per share. This compares to net income of $1,199,199, or 37 cents per share, for the nine months of 1991.
Net sales were $40,923,146 for the nine months of 1992, compared to net sales of $36,128,086 for the nine months of 1991.
"Sales rose during the third quarter as a result of the acquisitions of Peter Altenbach & Son in Germany and SePro Products in the U.S. during the previous 12 months," said Henry C. Wheeler, chairman and chief executive officer. "However, earnings are below the 1991 level because of the economic recessions in the United States, Canada, Germany and the United Kingdom; the considerable costs of absorbing our acquisitions; and our programs to slim down and improve the efficiency of our factories in all four countries. The company is well-positioned for next year."
"Our U.S. medical products division is doing well, with sales running well ahead of 1991 for the nine months, helped largely by the addition of SePro Products," Mr. Wheeler said. "We expect sales and profits from this division to expand steadily in the future."
"Our consumer products business in Germany has gone from a boom year in 1991 to a recession this year. It's marginally profitable now, but we anticipate further improvement in the coming months as a result of aggressive marketing and cost reduction efforts," he said.
"The volatility in foreign exchange rates does not seem to have made a material difference to us," Mr. Wheeler commented. "The 18 percent decline of the British pound in relation to the German deutschmark has resulted in lower costs at our English company and higher costs at our German company. To offset any negative impact in Germany, we are shifting some sales to our English company. We believe that in the long-term there will be little net effect on our operations."
During the third quarter, Acme United acquired the exclusive marketing and distribution rights in the United States for the Royl-Dern line of patent-pending skin-care and wound-care products. The line fits well with Acme United's own wound-care line and is expected to produce substantial sales and profits over the next five years.
Acme United is a leading producer of metal disposable surgical instruments, sterile procedure trays, germicidal products and wound-care packs for hospitals and the after-care market as well as the country's largest producer of household shears, scissors, wooden rulers and yardsticks for the consumer.
There are 3,337,620 common shares outstanding.
