ACME ELECTRIC ANNOUNCES THIRD-QUARTER RESULTS

EAST AURORA, N.Y., May 10 /PRNewswire/ -- Acme Electric Corporation (NYSE: ACE) announced results today for the 13-week period ended April 2, 1993. Net sales for the period were $18,221,000, compared with $18,231,000 for the comparable period of the prior year, with a net loss of $296,000, or 6 cents per share, compared with a net loss of $79,000, or 2 cents per share, for the comparable prior period.
Net sales for the 39-week period ended April 2, 1993, were $57,057,000, compared with net sales of $55,781,000 for the comparable prior period ended March 27, 1992, with a net loss of $214,000, or 5 cents per share, compared with net income for the comparable period ended March 27, 1992, of $567,500, or 12 cents per share. The company also realized a non-recurring gain of $219,000, or 5 cents per share, attributable to a change in accounting for income taxes under Statement of Financial Accounting Standard No. 109.
 G. Wayne Hawk, chairman and C.E.O., reported that Acme's Advanced Energy Systems Division and its wholly owned subsidiary, Acme-URDC, Inc., were primarily responsible for the third-quarter operating loss. He also stated that a technical problem with vented industrial cells sold to the rail equipment industry, exacerbated by a dispute over pricing, curtailed shipments during the quarter. He further noted that Acme-URDC, Inc., which sells sealed, maintenance-free fiber nickel cadmium batteries and battery charger systems, experienced a decline in orders from the military aerospace marketplace. As a result, the Acme Advanced Energy Systems Division shipped very little product in the third quarter.
Mr. Hawk also stated that "several corrective actions were taken, including a design change to the vented industrial batteries, implementation of a price increase for vented industrial batteries, reorganization of the battery production operation shifting responsibility to Acme-URDC, Inc., and a considerable overhead reduction."
Mr. Hawk concluded by stating that "our maintenance-free FNC battery system has been accepted by the U.S. Air Force for flight test on the F-16 and, together with further progress in equipping Apache and Blackhawk helicopters, indicates that the company should expect to retrofit significant segments of fixed and rotary-wing military aircraft with FNC battery systems."
At its meeting on May 7, 1993, the board of directors voted to increase the size of the board to six members and elected Robert J. McKenna a director of the corporation. Mr. McKenna, president and chief operating officer, is expected to stand for election to a full term at the next annual meeting of shareholders.
