ACIS(R) supports Apple Computer Inc.'s QuickDraw(tm) 3D.

BOULDER, Colo.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Feb. 6, 1995--SPATIAL TECHNOLOGY INC inc - /ink/ increment, i.e. increase by one. Especially used by assembly programmers, as many assembly languages have an "inc" mnemonic.

Antonym: dec.
. today announced ACIS(R) support for Apple(R) QuickDraw(tm) 3D.

SPATIAL is working with Apple to integrate the ACIS Geometric Modeler with QuickDraw 3D to provide the world's most advanced visualization and modeling toolkit for 3D application developers.

ACIS is the world's most widely licensed geometric modeling toolkit, used as the foundation of new generation 3D modeling applications in mechanical, architectural and electrical engineering electrical engineering: see engineering.
electrical engineering

Branch of engineering concerned with the practical applications of electricity in all its forms, including those of electronics.
, geophysical sciences and molecular modeling. ACIS is licensed by more than 250 of the world's leading 3D modeling suppliers, developers and researchers, such as Applicon, Autodesk, Bentley Systems Bentley Systems, Incorporated, provides software for the "Design, construction and operation of the world's infrastructure". The company’s software serves the building, plant, civil, and geospatial vertical markets in the areas of architecture, engineering, construction (AEC) , Camax Manufacturing Technologies, Ford Motor Company, Gibbs & Associates, Hewlett-Packard, MacNeal-Schwendler, MARC Analysis, Mercedes-Benz and Sharp.

ACIS is an object oriented See object technology and object-oriented programming. , boundary representation In computer-aided design, boundary representation—often abbreviated as B-rep or BREP—is a method for representing shapes using the limits. A solid is represented as a collection of connected surface elements, the boundary between solid and non-solid.  geometric modeling toolkit, written in C++, designed to be used as the "geometry engine" for next generation 3D applications. ACIS provides an open architecture framework for wireframe An umbrella term for a general outline of some structure. For example, the rough design of Web pages may be called wireframes. See wireframe modeling. , surface and solid modeling. Linear and quadric quad·ric
adj.
Of or relating to geometric surfaces that are defined by quadratic equations.

Noun 1. quadric - a curve or surface whose equation (in Cartesian coordinates) is of the second degree
quadric surface
geometry is represented analytically, while free-form geometry is represented as NURBS. ACIS can easily be extended to include the developer's own sculptured geometry routines. ACIS supports manifold and non-manifold topology as well as bounded, semi- bounded, and unbounded geometry. ACIS capabilities can be accessed through its Applications Procedural Interface (API), or developers writing in C++ can add, derive, or extend classes through its Direct Object Interface, and otherwise take advantage of its object-oriented architecture.

QuickDraw 3D is a powerful set of APIs for the development of 3D graphics application software. It includes support for modeling, rendering, data transfer and user interface guidelines.

QuickDraw 3D supports real-time rendering in both software and hardware modes and will provide true plug-and-play compatibility with 3D acceleration hardware. Additionally, QuickDraw 3D includes a new 3D Metafile A file that contains other files. It generally refers to graphics files that can hold vector drawings and bitmaps. For example, Windows Metafiles (WMFs) and Enhanced Metafiles (EMFs) can store pictures in vector graphics and bitmap formats as well as text.  data format that will enable sharing of complete 3D scenes (objects, cameras, lights, renderers, etc.) between applications via the clipboard A reserved section of memory that is used as a temporary holding area for data that is copied or moved from one application to another using the copy and paste and cut and paste (move) menu options. Each time you transfer something into the clipboard, the previous contents are deleted.  or external data files. QuickDraw 3D will enable novice and expert users to easily manipulate 3D objects and scenes and provide a consistent user experience.

Integrating ACIS with QuickDraw 3D provides the means for interoperability between ACIS-based applications and other Power Macintosh See Power Mac.

(computer) Power Macintosh - Apple Computer's personal computer based on the PowerPC, introduced on 1994-03-14. Existing 680x0 code (both applications and device drivers) run on Power Macintosh systems without modification via a Motorola 68LC040 emulator.
(tm) applications. Any QuickDraw 3D application will be able to share data with ACIS-based applications and then manipulate that 3D data. Applications based on both ACIS and QuickDraw 3D will also be able to output ACIS .sat files for use by ACIS-based products such as AutoCAD and MicroStation Modeler.

In addition, any ACIS-based, PowerMac(tm) application developer will be able to take advantage of the graphics tools in QuickDraw 3D. For example, hardware assisted rendering or QuickDraw's user interface creation tools will be available to ACIS 3D Toolkit(tm) developers.

"The integration of the industry standard ACIS Geometric Modeler and QuickDraw 3D provide a 3D application development environment unlike anything previously available to Macintosh developers," said Richard M. Sowar, CEO (1) (Chief Executive Officer) The highest individual in command of an organization. Typically the president of the company, the CEO reports to the Chairman of the Board.  and Founder of SPATIAL TECHNOLOGY. "ACIS is the perfect complement to QuickDraw 3D because it provides advanced 3D modeling capabilities with 'topological cognizance' found no where else in the industry."

"SPATIAL TECHNOLOGY's support for QuickDraw 3D is a significant development for Apple in the CAD/CAM/CAE market," said Larry Tesler Lawrence G. (Larry) Tesler (born April 24, 1945) is a computer scientist working in the field of human-computer interaction. Tesler has worked at Xerox PARC, Apple Computer, Amazon. , Vice President and Chief Scientist at Apple Computer. "ACIS and QuickDraw 3D will provide the Macintosh development community with a robust environment for developing the next generation of easy-to-use CAD/CAM/CAE and other 3D products."

SPATIAL TECHNOLOGY INC., Boulder, was founded in 1986 to facilitate the transition of the CAD/CAM/CAE industry into 3D by providing next-generation, object-oriented, solid modeling technology industry-wide. The company has developed into the leading supplier of enabling software technologies in solid modeling - The ACIS(R) Geometric Modeler; automated machining - Strata(R); interactive visualization Interactive visualization is a branch of graphic visualization in computer science that studies how humans interact with computers to create graphic illustrations of information and how this process can be made more efficient.  - Advanced Rendering(tm), and accelerated 3D modeling(tm) application development - ACIS 3D Toolkit(tm). -0-
