ACID SPILL HAVOC; TRAFFIC.

AN acid spill at a chemical plant caused severe traffic disruption yesterday.

The alarm was raised shortly after 10.30am when hydrochloric acid hydrochloric acid: see hydrogen chloride.

Solution in water of hydrogen chloride (HCl), a gaseous inorganic compound.
 leaked from a container at the Gouldings plant on Centre Park Road on the south side of Cork.

Emergency services attended the scene and business premises all along the road were evacuated.

Surrounding roads were also closed causing serious traffic delays in the area until yesterday evening.

A Gouldings spokesman said: "Some fumes were caused during the spill but these have now been neutralised."
