Students take honors in essay, poetry contest

The following Eugene School District Eugene School District (4J) is a public school district in the U.S. state of Oregon. It serves the city of Eugene Elementary schools
  • Adams Elementary School
  • Alternative Kindergarten
  • Awbrey Park Elementary School
  • Bertha Holt Elementary School
 students won awards in the Eugene Education Association's annual Martin Luther King Jr. essay and poetry contest:

In elementary poetry, Tristan Baumgardner, a second-grader at Harris, took first place; Noah Stoddard, a third-grader at Awbrey Park, third; and Alex Holland, a fifth-grader at Hillside Alternative, honorable mention.

In middle school essay, first place went to Alondra Rosales, a seventh-grader at Kelly Middle School, and Scarlett Frunz, also a seventh-grader at Kelly, got an honorable mention.

Local teams awarded in Lego tournament

Three local teams won awards at the Intel Oregon First Lego League The FIRST Lego League (also known by its acronym FLL) is a competition for elementary and middle school students (ages 9-14, 9-16 in Europe), arranged by the FIRST organization. The competition revolves around making Lego robots to complete many tasks.  Championship Tournament.

 Robot Dependability dependability - software reliability  Award. This award is presented to the team whose robot works consistently and dependably every time. Team members are Brent Madden mad·den

, Michael VonHipple, Mathew Newman, Evan Davis Evan Davis may refer to

  • Evan Davis (businessman), co-founder and former President of fashion label Enyce.
, Anya Gearhart, Cole Peppis and Ben Nakhnikian-Weintraub. The team was coached by Craig McKenzie.

Second place in the Robot Dependability category went to the "Solar Dragons," a team of homeschoolers from Eugene. Team members are Claire Leppold, Marc Leppold, Zach Wilson, Asa Clevenger, Mackenzie Clevenger and Daniel Sellers. Their coach was Robin Clevenger.

The "Briggs Tigers" from Briggs Middle School in Springfield took second place in the Fred Meyer Teamwork Award. This award goes to the team whose members best demonstrate extraordinary enthusiasm and spirit, exceptional partnership, the utmost respect for their own teammates and support and encouragement for other teams. Team members are Jennifer Dunphy, Kyle Kohl, Aubrie Bush, William Leedom and Chris Wilson. The team's coach was Kathy McCumsey.
