Crow High teen tapped for statewide advisory group

, a sophomore at Crow High School, has been named to serve on state Superintendent of Public Instruction Susan Castillo's new Youth Advisory Team. Davis is a leader in student government and is an athlete on Crow's football and wrestling teams. He said he wants to serve in order to involve small, rural schools in decision-making on state education policy. Castillo said she hopes the diverse group will play a key role in changing and improving public education in Oregon. The team meets next on May 9. Young journalists to compete at state convention

Elmira High School is a 4A public high school of about 500 students in Elmira, Oregon located approximately 15 miles from Eugene.
 will send 12 of its best young journalists to compete at the national level at the Journalism Education Association/Northwest Scholastic Press Association spring convention this weekend in Portland. North Eugene student is local Junior Miss

Chelsea Mortenson of North Eugene High School North Eugene High School is a public high school of about 1,200 students in Eugene, Oregon, United States. Fifteen juniors from seven high schools competed for more than $3,000 in scholarships and the opportunity to represent Lane County in the state Junior Miss Program in August. Judging categories included scholastic, interview, talent, fitness and poise.

Mortenson won a $1,100 scholarship. Other scholarship winners included first alternate Kendra Bebout of Thurston High ($700), second alternate Maiah Albi of South Eugene High ($500), scholastic achievement winner Mary Pilon of Churchill High ($500), and Spirit of Junior Miss winner Liv Gibbons Famous people named Gibbons include:

  • Billy Gibbons, guitarist for ZZ Top
  • Cedric Gibbons (1893–1960), American art director
  • Christopher Gibbons (1615 - 1676), English composer, son of Orlando

Thurston Middle School musicians win accolades

Darrin Flanigan and Rachel Paslay, both students at Thurston Middle School, received Outstanding Musicianship honors at the Oregon Music Educators Association District 21 Solo and Ensemble Festival at Shasta Middle School last month.
