International High School program receives honor

The Eugene School District's International High School has been named a runner-up for this year's The Goldman Sachs The Goldman Sachs Group, Inc., or simply Goldman Sachs (NYSE: GS) is one of the world's largest global investment banks. , a program in all four district high schools, was selected from among international studies programs at nearly 200 elementary, middle and high schools that applied for the prizes awards, representing approximately 150,000 students.

Started 20 years ago, IHS serves more than 1,500 students in grades 9 through 12. It is open to all students interested in international studies. The school offers an integrated curriculum organized thematically and by region, with study involving the history, literature, art, politics, economics, and belief systems of cultures across time and around the globe.

The Goldman Sachs Foundation and Asia Society The Asia Society is the leading global and pan-Asian organization who's mission is to strengthen relationships and promote understanding among the people, leaders and institutions of Asia and the United States. It was founded in 1956 by John D.  sponsor the Prizes program. There are five categories overall - Elementary/Intermediate; High School; University; State, Media and Technology. The total number of runners-up for all the categories was six.

Emerald Valley's robots beat the competition

A team from Emerald Valley School in Eugene took top honors at the First LEGO League The FIRST Lego League (also known by its acronym FLL) is a competition for elementary and middle school students (ages 9-14, 9-16 in Europe), arranged by the FIRST organization. The competition revolves around making Lego robots to complete many tasks.  regional competition, held in Roseburg on Dec. 3. Competing against 15 other teams, the Emerald Turtles scored highest in robot performance, and also received a perfect score in creative presentation of their research. As a result, the team took the Director's Award, which reflects "outstanding achievement in robot design, research project, teamwork and robot performance."

Team members were Aidan Davis, 10; Daniel Sellers, 11; Tristan Bredeweg, 9; Alex Quigley, 12; and Arion Lewis, 8. The Turtles' coach was Melissa Davis. The students had to create a robot that could perform a variety of tasks. The contest encourages youngsters to explore technology and science in creative ways while also learning about teamwork and other life skills. The award earned the Turtles an invitation to compete at the Intel Oregon 2005 First LEGO League State Tournament, set for Jan. 14 in Hillsboro.

Emerald Valley School is a private alternative school that accepts students tuition-free through contracts with public school districts. The school, located at Westmoreland Elementary, serves approximately 30 students in grades kindergarten through 12.

HEP is a federally funded, alternative education program for individuals 16 years and older who have not completed high school but would like to do so. The program, hosted by the university since 1967, also gives migrant and seasonal farm worker youths the opportunity to prepare for and take the General Education Development test.
