Siuslaw library assistant named Classified Employee of the Year

Wendy Rohner, a library assistant in the Siuslaw School District, has been named Oregon's Classified Employee of the Year by the Oregon School Employees Association, a labor union representing more than 20,000 employees. She was nominated by Siuslaw chapter vice president Nick Woodworth, with letters of recommendation from the superintendent, chapter secretary and a second-grade teacher at Siuslaw Elementary School. They praised her for her union activism, community involvement and dedication to the students she serves. She'll be presented with a trophy at an awards banquet June 25.

Malabon Elementary students do well in Bethel poster contest

Students at Malabon Elementary School won eight of 10 prizes in the We Are Bethel celebration poster contest, held June 4. Fourth-grader Mikaela Standifer took the grand prize, as determined by a popular vote of festival attendees. Other winners from the school were Siciliy Griffo, Roari Melville, Ally Townsend, Abby Stock, Deborah Cole, Kameron Taylor and Hannah Nealy. The school, with leadership from music teacher Michael "Mule" Green, has been showcasing student art regularly in a cafeteria gallery.

LibertyBank announces three LCC scholarship winners

LibertyBank has announced the first three recipients of its "Making a Difference" scholarship for local high school students who plan to attend Lane Community College. They are Sean Rodgers from Churchill High School, Elyse Thompson from North Eugene High School and Kaitlynn Jaeger from Sheldon High School. Each will receive a $1,000 scholarship. They were selected based on clear demonstration of their intent to make a difference. The bank hopes to expand the program to three additional high schools in 2006.

Earl Hulstrom, Eugene Masonic Family scholarships awarded

Six students were awarded $1,000 scholarships, either a Earl Hulstrom Scholarship or the Eugene Masonic Family Scholarship, at a ceremony earlier this month. They are Elizabeth Conway of Junction City High School, Alyssa Kropf of Harrisburg High School, Elizabeth Hubbard of Sheldon High School, Haley Mesnik of Churchill High School, Anand Patel of South Eugene High School and Ekaeta Udosenata of North Eugene High School.

National College Access Network honors three seniors

Three local high school seniors were among six in Oregon and 40 nationwide to receive $2,000 from the National College Access Network, the Oregon University System and the Oregon Student Assistance Commission announced this week. They are Jennifer Halttuten and Katyna Omidfar-Tran of Springfield High School and Jeff Harper of Central Linn High School. The scholarships are directed toward students who have received counseling or academic services preparing them for college.

Elmira High seniors recognized for math achievements

Angela Yost, Amy Owens and Claire Faust, seniors at Elmira High School, have been recognized for outstanding achievement in the study of mathematics during their high school careers. They'll receive certificates of merit from the Oregon Council of Mathematics and the Oregon Department of Education.

South Eugene High student wins national art award

Carrie Pinkstaff of South Eugene High School was named a United States National Award winner in art, having been nominated by teacher Gwyneth O'Connell.
