Kelly Middle School student earns top honor for poster

Maria Maita-Keppeler, a seventh-grader at Kelly Middle School, was the first-place winner in a statewide poster contest sponsored by the League of Oregon Cities. The theme of the poster was, "If I were Mayor, I would ...", and students were asked to illustrate what their cities would look like if their mayoral ideas became reality. The posters were judged on creativity, development of ideas, clarity of thought, environmental stewardship and leadership. Maria will receive a new computer and a $500 savings bond. Her entry, along with others, will be showcased at the league's annual conference in Portland this week.

Thurston High senior named outstanding student

Thurston High School senior Andrew Leavitt was honored at a ceremony last week as the recipient of the quarterly Outstanding Student award from Northwest Community Credit Union. Leavitt, who has a 4.0 GPA and is a member of the German Club and the 4-H Club, will receive a $100 deposit in a savings account. The recognition program, Northwest Best at THS, honors high-achieving students at Thurston.

Club honors 2 for academics, activities, volunteerism

Sara Quackenbush and Breylan Deal were named Students of the Month for October by the Bohemia Sunrisers Kiwanis Club. The students were selected for their high academic achievement, participation in school activities and volunteerism in the community.

National scholar program recognizes North Bend youth

Nicholas Tyson, a student at North Bend High School, was named a Commended Student in the 2005 National Merit Scholarship Program. He's one of about 34,000 students being recognized for their exceptional academic promise. His standing places him in the top 5 percent of the more than 1 million students who entered the 2005 competition by taking the 2003 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test.
