Churchill, Shasta student councils honored

Churchill High School and Shasta Middle School have been recognized by the Oregon Association of Student Councils The Oregon Association of Student Councils or OASC is a non-profit leadership based organization, serving middle and high school students in Oregon. OASC provides leadership development to students and adult advisers.  for their outstanding student councils.

To receive the award, the councils had to demonstrate involvement in school and community service, activities promoting school spirit, pride, sportsmanship, student and staff recognition, and involvement in leadership training.

Kelly students place in Japanese-speaking contest

The following Kelly Middle School students recently received awards at the 16th Annual Japanese Speech Contest held in Portland: Maria Maita-Keppeler placed first in Division 4 and Aly Schild placed second in Division 5.

They were selected by the mathematics department of their school on the basis of diligence, creativity, growth and effort in the study of mathematics.

COTTAGE GROVE - Special education teacher Kerry Clawson has been named Outstanding Technology Educator of the Year by the Northwest Council for Computer Education. Clawson received the award for introducing hand-held computers to students in her classes at Cottage Grove High School Cottage Grove High School is a public high school located in Cottage Grove, Oregon. It has a newer school building, opened in 2003 to replace the old high school building that was built in 1939 and held its first classes in 1940. .

She was also recognized for her work with at-risk students The term at-risk students is used to describe students who are "at risk" of failing academically, for one or more of any several reasons. The term can be used to describe a wide variety of students, including,
  1. ethnic minorities
  2. academically disadvantaged
 and for helping to develop an engineering program for girls at the school.

Environmental leadership wins praise for Churchill

Churchill High School has become the first school in the nation to be presented with the Green Flag Environmental Leadership Award.

The students were recognized for investigating problems such as indoor air quality Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) deals with the content of interior air that could affect health and comfort of building occupants. The IAQ may be compromised by microbial contaminants (mold, bacteria), chemicals (such as carbon monoxide, radon), allergens, or any mass or energy stressor , toxic materials and pest control. They proposed environmentally friendly solutions and made public presentations on what they learned.

The goal of the Green Flag School Programs is to stop environmental hazards in schools.

Sheldon musical groups take top honors in Orlando

The Sheldon High School Sheldon High School may refer to:

 wind ensemble and jazz band won top honors at the Heritage Festival in Orlando, Fla., last month.

Sheldon's wind ensemble tied for first place and received a gold rating in its division. As a result, the ensemble has been invited to compete in the Festival of Gold Series: National Invitational Band & Orchestra Festival.

Sheldon's premier jazz band, Elements, won first place and received a gold rating in its division. In addition, Elements received one of only four Adjudicators Awards, given to groups that receive the highest scores from all the judges.

The intermediate jazz band received a silver rating in its division.
