Girls earn honors in Junior Miss competition

Emily Johnson of Churchill High School was selected Junior Miss 2004 from West Central Lane County and Emily Hartung of Springfield High School Springfield High School may refer to:
  • Springfield High School (Colorado) — Springfield, Colorado
  • Springfield High School (Illinois) — Springfield, Illinois
  • Springfield High School (Louisiana) — Springfield, Louisiana
 was selected from East Central Lane County. Both girls received $1,000 scholarships and will go on to compete in the Oregon State Junior Miss Program on Aug. 7 in Salem.

Others honored in the West Central Lane event were: Laura Swanson, Churchill High, First Alternate and top scholastic contestant, two $500 scholarships; Alicia Brower, Churchill High, Spirit of Junior Miss, $200 scholarship; Lara Colvin and Hareem Park, both of Churchill, scholastic finalists.

Others honored in the East Central Lane competition were: Nicole Frey, Sheldon High School Sheldon High School may refer to:

 girls wins state Arbor Day poster contest

A poster created by Nicole Medford, a fifth-grader at North Bend Middle School, has been chosen as the Oregon winner of the National Arbor Day poster contest presented by the National Arbor Day Foundation The National Arbor Day Foundation is the world's oldest and largest tree-planting organization.[1] Its million members plant millions of trees every year. New members receive 10 free trees. .

Her poster will compete in the national contest, and the winner will be announced on National Arbor Day, April 30.

Future Business Leaders students earn honors

On May 20, 1998, student Kipland "Kip" Kinkel killed his parents, William and Faith, both Spanish teachers at local high schools.
 Future Business Leaders of America took home awards at the State Leadership Conference held April 4-6 in Portland. The Thurston teams joined 1,500 other high school students for the business education state championships.

Teddy Bear Picnic scheduled for girls

The Girl Scouts Girl Scouts, recreational and service organization founded (1912) in Savannah, Ga., by Mrs. Juliette Gordon Low (1860–1927). It was originally modeled after the Boy Scouts and Girl Guides, organizations created in Great Britain by Sir Robert Baden-Powell during  of Western Rivers Council has planned a Teddy Bear Picnic for girls ages 5 to 17 on May 1 from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. at the Veterans of Foreign Wars Hall, 1626 Willamette St., Eugene.

The girls and their teddy bears will participate in Girl Scout activities and learn more about Girl Scouts and what they offer. Teddy bears should be 15 inches or less in height.

The event is free and open to the public. Reservations are requested, call the council at 485-5911, Ext. 0.

Workshop offers help to lower college costs

 based in Portland, will hold a free workshop on Wednesday for parents of college-bound students, grades 10 and 11, to help students with the knowledge of how to lower the cost of college.

The workshop will take place from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at Linn-Benton Community College Linn-Benton Community College (LBCC) is a two year junior college, located in Linn County, Oregon.

Events to celebrate words, reading, writing

On Saturday, three groups, along with the Lane Arts Council, will celebrate words, reading and writing.

Beginning at 10 a.m., the Eugene Public Library will feature the Young Writers Association's Glitterary Festival offering families the opportunity to meet authors, hear stories, participate in hands-on arts activities, sing songs and play with words. This event will continue through 3 p.m. For additional information, call 485-2259.

From 1 p.m. to 3 p.m., children 8 years and younger and their families are invited to the Springfield Public Library for the Be Excited About Reading Faire, an afternoon of picture book related activities.

At 7:30 p.m. the same day, the Very Little Theatre at 2350 Hilyard St., will present the Multi-Cultural Storytelling Festival concert with nationally known storytellers Michael Parent, Gladys Coggswell and Megumi. Tickets are $8 per person, or $20 for a family of four. This event is supported by the National Storytelling Network.
