Willamette High student takes first in competition

Head Start honors Springfield teacher

Jan Olguin, a teacher at the B Street Head Start of Lane County program in Springfield for the last nine years, has been named Head Start Teacher of the Year for Oregon. She was selected based on an application that included numerous letters of recommendation. She'll be honored at a reception in Ontario in the fall and will be in the running for regional recognition. Head Start is a national, nonprofit early education program targeting children from low-income families.

Seniors win Weyerhaeuser Foundation scholarships

Alexandra Christensen, Miriam Kater and Cole Smith have won scholarships presented by the Weyerhaeuser Co. Foundation to children of Weyerhaeuser employees.

Selection was based on test scores, academic achievement, leadership, school recommendations and extracurricular activities. Awards range from $1,000 to $4,000 annually.

Eugene Education Association gives scholarships

The Eugene Education Association has chosen five local students to receive $600 scholarships. Winners were chosen on the basis of outstanding scholarly ability and a desire to pursue a career in professional education.

Recipients are Gabrielle Dillion and Amanda Krause, both of Willamette High School, and Jessica Hadaway Jobanek, Elizabeth Posegate and Tyla Tuomi, all of South Eugene High School.

South Lane students receive scholarship awards

Six Cottage Grove High School Cottage Grove High School is a public high school located in Cottage Grove, Oregon. It has a newer school building, opened in 2003 to replace the old high school building that was built in 1939 and held its first classes in 1940.  students have received scholarships from the Cottage Grove Community Foundation. Scholarships are awarded on the basis of scholastic achievement, participation in school activities and community service.

Megan Sheredy and Ashley Kemp each received a $500 award from the foundation's Permanent Scholarship Fund. Peter Jenkins and Katie Haberkorn won $500 each from the foundation's South Lane Education Fund.

A $1,000 scholarship provided by the foundation's Elizabeth Stewart Memorial Fund was presented to Sarah Pruitt. Stephanie Frederick received a $1,200 scholarship from the foundation's Woodard Family Scholarship for Lane Community College.

Eugene student will attend summer arts program

Javier Hernandez of Eugene will attend Interlochen Arts Camp this summer in Interlochen, Mich. Hernandez, a junior at North Eugene High School North Eugene High School is a public high school of about 1,200 students in Eugene, Oregon, United States. It is located at 200 Silver Lane near the Santa Clara area of Eugene.[1] North Eugene's mascot is the Highlander. , is one of forty piano students chosen worldwide to attend the camp and the only high school pianist from Oregon.

Hernandez will present a concert Saturday to raise funds to attend the camp. "Passion for Piano" will be at 2 p.m. in the auditorium at North Eugene High School, 200 Silver Lane. Admission will be by donation.
