Smith admitted afterwards his players were simply not tough enough to hack it when the pressure was on in front of their own supporters after a humiliating hu·mil·i·ate

He said:"We've not been good enough when we've been expected to win a game on our own pitch. There are no excuses.

"Regardless of what systems we have used or what players have been playing, the home matches have all ended up in a very similar fashion.

"The last time we played in the Champions League everyone was unhappy with the way we went about it. They'll probably be unhappywith the way we played in this one as well. But there is no doubt we were far more solid and dependable in that previous campaign. The games have not been that different away from home.

"But the pressure of having to create at home has been something we have not been able to handle particularly well."

Smith reacted sarcastically when asked if his radical tactical overhaul for last night's match had backfired.

The manager axed AWOL Algerian Madjid Bougherra Madjid Bougherra (Arabic: مجيد بوغرة) (born October 7 1982) is an Algerian professional footballer who currently plays for Charlton Athletic, having signed for the club from Sheffield Wednesday on 27 January 2007 for £2.  then named a team with three central defenders.

Smith also found room for a threepronged attack of Kyle Lafferty Kyle Lafferty (born 16 September 1987 in Enniskillen, Northern Ireland) is a professional footballer who currently plays for Burnley Football Club in the English Football League Championship. ,Kenny Miller and domestic goal machine Kris Boyd in an attempt to break Stuttgart down.

But it failed miserably as Rangers capitulated again.

Smith said: "Well, when you lose the first two games 4-1 you have to come up with something that you think might help. As it turned out it didn't help that much - so it's all my fault!

"We have had a struggle at home trying to impose ourselves while trying to also attain a decent level of defending.

"We have taken points and looked comfortable away from home but we have never looked that way at home.

"There was a spell when we had chances to get back into the game tonight but we've had opportunities like that in all our home games. It wasn't a turning point - it was just an opportunity to get back into it.

"Tonight's match was very similar to the previous two matches at Ibrox. We have looked more comfortable away from home.

"We have even been far better in our possession of the ball. That's been a disappointment for us.

"The variation and disparity of our play away from home and at home has been the biggest disappointment in the section."

Of his decision to axe Bougherra, Smith said only: "It was a fairly straightforward decision to make."

He was far more happy to discuss the stunning form of keeper Allan McGregor who saved Rangers from a far moresavage beating with a string of stunning saves.

Smith said:"Towards the end of the game it was typical when you lose your discipline and try to open up a bit. That left us a bit exposed at the back but if there's a better goalkeeper around than Allan McGregor then I've yet to see him.

"It's the one thing we have got on a regular basis - an exceptionally good goalie."

Stuttgart boss Markus Babbel said: "I'm really happy with the way my team played. The only slight hitch was that we could have scored more.

"It was difficult for Rangers to create chances. I'm really proud of my team - they did a really good job."
