ACE PEERS: BOSS HOGS LIMELIGHT.Byline: PAUL O'HEHIR FATHER-TO-BE Gavin Peers Gavin Peers is a footballer playing for Sligo Rovers in the Eircom League. Gavin who started his footballing career at Blackburn Rovers later moved to Mansfield Town where he earned 30 appearances. Gavin a very solid right full back with a lot of skill. reckons it's time the Sligo Rovers players put a stop to Gerry Carr's ramblings. The assistant manager scored the winning goal in the 1994 FAI Cup final and that's the last time Sligo won the trophy under Willie McStay. And, according to tongue-in-cheek Peers, Carr is still milking the memories 15 years later. "Hopefully we do win the cup, and whoever does score the winner will outclass out·class tr.v. out·classed, out·class·ing, out·class·es To surpass decisively, so as to appear of a higher class. outclass Verb to surpass (someone) in performance or quality Gerry," said the versatile defender. "It's a long time ago now and he's still living off it - I think he needs to let it go. He can't really talk about anything else!" But Peers knows he and his team-mates can achieve legendary status in the town if they beat Sporting Fingal in Tallaght on Sunday. "Around the town that's all anyone is talking about," he added. "It's a massive town for that kind of thing. "We had massive crowds for the semi-final against Waterford, and we also had that a few seasons ago when we had Derry here in the semi-final. "It just makes you wonder why the fans aren't here every week. That's the same with all the grounds. If that was the case the league would be in a much better place." Peers himself is in a better place these days. He used to deputise dep´u`tise v. t. 1. same as deputize. Verb 1. deputise - act as a substitute; "She stood in for the soprano who suffered from a cold" deputize, step in, substitute as captain if and when Conor O'Grady was injured or suspended. Noun 1. armband - worn around arm as identification or to indicate mourning , preferring to leave that task to either Danny Ventre or Alan Keane. Indeed, Keane looks set to skipper the side this weekend. "I handed all that up a while ago," said Peers, the former Blackburn and Mansfield player. "It's a bit of a coward way but I didn't really want it. "I thought there was too much pressure on me at the time and I didn't really want it. People slagging me all the time and the lads giving me a bit of stick, so I said 'Ah, here', and handed it up. "I thought I had to do extra and I'd just rather do it on the pitch. I'd rather lead by example on the pitch that off it. I'm a quiet lad." For now, Peers' immediate thoughts are centred on this weekend's game but what of the future considering he is out of contract?
