ACE MAYBE FOUND SIRMONS COULD BE TOP Q.H. ARM.

Byline: Heather Gripp Staff Writer

Eddie Sirmons could be the ace the Quartz Hill High baseball team needs to fill its vacancy on the mound. The incoming senior right-hander is having an impressive summer after missing much of the spring with an injured hand.

His play earned him a berth in last week's Valley Invitational in·vi·ta·tion·al

Baseball League all-star game An all-star game is an exhibition game played by the best players in their sports league. The players are often chosen by a popular vote of fans of the sport and the game often occurs at the halfway point of the regular season, although this is not the case for some all-star games , but it is especially encouraging to the Rebels because this year's ace, Matt Ware Matthew Jesse Ware (born December 2, 1982 in Santa Monica, California) is currently an American football defensive back in the NFL for the Arizona Cardinals. He was waived by the Philadelphia Eagles on September 2, 2006 and picked up by the Cardinals. , is not expected to be a starting pitcher Noun 1. starting pitcher - (baseball) a pitcher who starts in a baseball game

``He's doing really well,'' Quartz Hill coach Lance Pierson said of Sirmons.

Sirmons also showed promise during the high school season. He started 4-0, but then the injury kept him sidelined until the final weeks of the season.

In Thursday's all-star game at USC An abbreviation for U.S. Code. , Sirmons joined Rebels catcher Brian Burke For the hockey executive, see .

on the McCoys, who defeated the Hatfields 11-3. Sirmons pitched the third inning for the McCoys, allowing two runs on three hits, but he also struck out the side without issuing a walk. He was one of only two pitchers in the game to record as many as three strikeouts.

Quartz Hill's need for a quality pitcher such as Sirmons has been evident as the Rebels struggle in VIBL play. The team that went undefeated in Golden League play this spring has only a handful of summer victories. The Rebels allowed a combined 28 runs Saturday in losses to Granada Hills and Cleveland of Reseda.

Ware and other starters such as Brian Chavez, who also pitches, are not playing with Quartz Hill this summer because of other baseball commitments. Although Ware went 8-0 with a 1.46 ERA and 82 strikeouts in 57 2/3 innings en route to earning All-State honors as a junior, Pierson said he plans to limit Ware's pitching to closing next season. Ware committed to UCLA UCLA University of California at Los Angeles

--Highlights continue: After setting a school record for wins and earning the program's first postseason victory, Vasquez of Acton is again achieving new heights this summer in American Legion American Legion, national association of male and female war veterans, founded (1919) in Paris. Vince Ortiz, Tyler Brewer, Justin Brewer and Jeff Granillo represented Vasquez in the all-star game Sunday at Birmingham High in Lake Balboa.

The all-star game followed one of Vasquez's biggest games of the summer. Vasquez overcame a 5-1 deficit to upset first-place West Hills/Chaminade on Saturday, improving Vasquez's record to 8-8-1.

--Familiar foe: Golden League batters got out of facing Billy Spottiswood when the right-hander, who developed into one of the region's top pitchers, transferred from Palmdale to Cleveland of Reseda after his sophomore year. But for Lancaster, there was no escaping Spottiswood on Saturday as he had a big day against his old rivals in an American Legion doubleheader.
