EDWARDS AIR FORCE BASE - Desert High School senior Tyson Clark continues to amaze school officials with the recognition and scholarship awards coming in before graduation June 5.

To top the list so far this year, Tyson Clark has received an Air Force Academy and $80,000 in scholarship funds from the Naval ROTC, which Clark can use at the institution of his choice, said school counselor Nancy Arellano.

In addition, Clark will receive at least $4,000 from the Coca-Cola Foundation, $1,000 from the Tandy Technology Scholars Program, $750 from the annual Wilma H. Addington Memorial Scholarship in Bakersfield, $100 from the Veterans of Foreign Wars for a speech on democracy, and a bronze medal at the state level in the Wendy's Heisman High School Scholar-Athlete program, Arellano said.

Clark, who aspires to become an engineer and develop prosthetic devices, also has been accepted at Notre Dame, UCLA, Stanford, Cornell and Purdue universities, Arellano said.

Clark has not made a decision on where he will attend, but he is leaning toward Stanford, she said.

Clark volunteers in the DARE program to prevent drug abuse and gang involvement, and is involved in his church, sports, student government and peer tutoring.

``When he's helping students having problems in the class, he takes it upon himself to identify the problem areas and instead of just saying, `Oh, well,' he actively works to make things better,'' Arellano said.

In April, Clark has the potential of receiving $20,000 in place of the $4,000 already guaranteed him by Coca-Cola when he undergoes a series of interviews as one of 150 finalists, Arellano said.

As a Tandy Technology Scholars, Clark's picture is in the March issue of Time Magazine with 99 other Tandy scholars who received scholarships, she said.

LANCASTER - Antelope Valley High School's band boosters are taking orders for New York Cheesecakes until Wednesday for delivery March 25.

The cakes, from a bakery in the Los Angeles area, are four pounds, pre-cut into 16 pieces and priced at $13 for plain and $13.50 for apple-filled, said club vice president Ken Hood.

Proceeds will go toward covering traveling expenses to competitions in Washington, D.C., San Diego, Phoenix and other areas during the coming months, Hood said.
