ACCESS HEALTH TO SUPPLY HEALTH CARE DEMAND MANAGEMENT COMPONENT TO INNOVATIVE HOSPITAL-EMPLOYER PACT

SACRAMENTO, Calif., March 31 /PRNewswire/ -- Access Health Marketing Inc. (NASDAQ: ACCS) has signed an agreement with Legacy Health System, Portland, Ore., to provide health care demand management services to 5,500 employees and dependents of Precision Castparts Corp. The agreement covers the ground-breaking pact between Legacy and Precision Castparts Corp., announced in February of this year, which was the nation's first fully-capitated direct contract for all medical services between a hospital system and a major employer, where the provider has guaranteed the employer a 10 percent reduction in medical care costs and no price increases for three years.
Access Health will provide Precision Castparts employees and dependents with Personal Health Advisor, a toll-free, telephone-based consumer health care information service that operates 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Personal Health Advisor provides a broad range of information services to help consumers with every aspect of managing their health -- from education and prevention, to assistance in making informed decisions about using health care services, to aid in selecting physicians and other health care providers.
"The pact between Legacy and Precision Castparts broke new ground in the effort to contain employer health care costs while enhancing benefits to employees," said Kenneth B. Plumlee, president and chief executive officer of Access Health. "These innovative organizations recognize the importance of managing employee demand for health care services and improving employee access to accurate health care information. We are pleased to be involved in this innovative partnership."
Legacy Health System executives said that with the Precision Castparts agreement, the hospital system had maximized every opportunity to improve the cost-effectiveness of health care services and deliver high-quality care. "We needed a component that helps appropriately manage demand for health services, by improving consumer healthcare decision-making," said Robert Pallari, senior vice president. "Access Health is the technological leader and without peer in providing demand management services. We expect concepts such as Personal Health Advisor will become a fundamental and integral part of our health care delivery system."
The contract between Access Health and Legacy will be implemented beginning April 1, 1993. Access Health also announced the signing of a separate agreement with Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Oregon, the state's leading health insurer, for demand management services. The Legacy and Blue Cross contracts are together worth an estimated $750,000 in revenue to Access Health in the first year of contracts. "Based on successful pilot results, there are significant opportunities to expand use of Personal Health Advisor to a much greater audience throughout the state of Oregon," added Plumlee.
Access Health programs and services help managed care organizations, self-insured employers and hospitals manage consumer demand for healthcare services. Its health information, prevention and care management programs are designed to improve patient access, ensure the cost-effective delivery of care, and promote member satisfaction by providing consumers with information they need to make better health care decisions and avoid unnecessary or inappropriate care.
