ACC becomes an expert on medical building issues.

Healthcare construction is among the most challenging and rewarding work our construction teams accomplish. In addition to the safety concerns, time constraints and careful planning that go along with every project, construction for healthcare facilities allows no room for mistakes.

The delicate nature of the work makes us better construction professionals, with skills that lend themselves to many types of projects. Because we have extensive experience building around patients and medical staff, ACC's teams have become experts in dust control and noise mitigation. Moreover, this knowledge easily extends to corporate interiors and residential buildouts where we often build around employees and residents.

Most of the healthcare work our teams take on involves renovation or new construction of existing and continuously operating facilities. Precise planning and working in phases allows a healthcare facility to remain operational without jeopardizing the health and safety of its patients. ACC has set up intricate filtration systems to ensure no dust or debris will penetrate a populated area and we work with electrical and soundproofing experts to prevent any power failure or noise disturbance, which could interfere with the operation of critical machinery.

In October 2005 ACC completed an intensive $18.5 million modernization project at Stony Brook University Hospital Heart Center, which has not been renovated since its construction in 1980. We were able to carry out the entire project without disrupting hospital operations and managed to finish a month prior to the scheduled completion date. The key to our success was a two-phase plan, which strategically divided construction on crucial areas of the hospital, so that when one unit was closed another could compensate. The first phase included renovations to the orthopedic unit, the first portion of the Heart Center and an elevator bank. The second involved renovations to the M/S inpatient unit and completion of the second portion of the Heart Center.

ACC also specializes in construction of doctors' offices. We recently renovated a 3,700 s/f medical office in New York, including four exam rooms, waiting area, laboratory, x-ray room and offices. Doctors' offices are generally vacant during construction, making protection concerns less prevalent, but time constraints are more pressing to accommodate the doctors' scheduled move-in. As with hospitals, a key factor in the construction of doctors' offices is precise planning. Our teams must map out each step of the process to ensure that they remain on a tight schedule and that all equipment is safely and properly installed.

In the past few years, ACC has completed renovations and construction on numerous major hospitals and medical centers. For the Burke Rehabilitation Hospital in White Plains, N.Y., our work incorporated another aspect of hospital construction--making the facility accessible to those with physical disabilities. We constructed an Olympic approved 200-400-800 meter track that was finished with a special surface for wheelchair accessibility, multiple ADA ramps and new public and private roadways and parking lots.

Our construction of St. Mary's Hospital Drug Treatment Center's new Outpatient Health Center was a project ACC constructed from the ground up. The 20,000 s/f center in Brooklyn was a model of modernity. A steel moment frame structure was erected, in compliance with the adopted New York City seismic code. We installed rooftop HVAC units that both heat and cool the building and incorporated UV disinfection and recirculated air. ACC used glass block at the first floor windows, an innovation that maximizes the transmission of natural white light while securing the facility. The sky-lit facility serves as an addiction services center and houses methadone maintenance and medically supervised alcohol treatment programs.

One of our most carefully timed projects was the completion of interior and exterior work on the Basic Science Building at New York Medical College. ACC created a multi-phased project to accommodate daily quiet hours while classes were in session and to avoid disturbing the science lab's tight schedules.
