SIX TV LEGENDS DURING WALT DISNEY WORLD 'SALUTE TO TV' DAY
LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla., Sept. 21 /PRNewswire/ -- Six legendary television personalities -- Bill Cosby, Andy Griffith, Ted Koppel, producer-director-actor Sheldon Leonard, Dinah Shore and R.E. (Ted) Turner -- will be inducted into the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences' (ATAS') Hall of Fame Oct. 3, during gala ceremonies hosted by Ed McMahon and Betty White at the Walt Disney World Resort.
This marks the first time in the program's eight-year history the Television Academy has held its Hall of Fame ceremony outside Los Angeles. Celebrities, industry, studios and network executives, domestic and international media, and families and friends of the honorees will attend the black-tie banquet and ceremony in the Grand Ballroom of Disney's Yacht and Beach Club Convention Center.
Previous inductees such as Roone Ariedge, Leonard Goldenson, Don Hewitt, Dr. Frank Stanton, Mike Wallace and David Wolper will join the tribute. Presenters include Angie Dickinson, Phylicia Rashad, Don Knotts, Fred Silverman, Larry King, Drew Koppel and Henry (Hank) Aaron.
Prior to the ceremony, ATAS President Leo Chaloukian and other Academy officials will break ground on the new ATAS Hall of Fame Plaza at the Disney-MGM Studios Theme Park, the designated East Coast home of ATAS' Hall of Fame.
Scheduled to open next year, the eastern Hall of Fame Plaza will replicate the North Hollywood original where a striking terraced garden features a golden Emmy statue surrounded by bronze sculptures of such Hall of Fame TV legends as Bob Hope, Jackie Gleason, Milton Berle, Lucille Ball, Sid Caesar, Carol Burnett, Jack Benny, Johnny Carson, Mary Tyler Moore and others.
On the evening of Oct.3, Cosby, Koppel, Leonard, Shore, Griffith and Turner -- all confirmed to be present for the ceremony -- will be honored as the 51st through 56th Hall of Fame inductees by a star- studded cast of presenters, according to Hall of Fame Chairman Edgar Scherick.
Ed McMahon and Betty White, TV greats in their own right, will co- host the evening that pays homage to six of television's brightest stars. In addition to celebrity presenters and acceptance speeches by the inductees, highlights include a musical entertainment tribute produced by Walt Disney Attractions Senior Show Director Gary Paben and video clips capturing magical moments of their careers.
The Academy of Television Arts & Sciences' Hall of Fame induction ceremony culminates a "Splashtacular" weekend (Oct. 1-3) of newsworthy entertainment industry events that includes the grand opening of Splash Mountain ride-adventure at the Magic Kingdom, a press event pertinent to Disney's highly anticipated animated feature, "Aladdin," plus expected appearances by the cast members of Eddie Murphy's new Hollywood Pictures movie, "The Distinguished Gentleman" and Emilio Estevez' latest project, "The Mighty Ducks."
