ACA announces the release of three new resources.

Many people make the mistake of assuming that supervising juvenile offenders is the same as managing their male counterparts. The American Correctional Association offers an array of resources that examine the challenges of supervising juvenile offenders. The items listed below are just a sampling of what is available from ACA.

Double Jeopardy: A Counselor's Guide to Treating Juvenile Male Sex Offenders/Substance Abusers by Christopher Frey, MSW, LCSW, provides counselors with a roadmap for working with juvenile male sex offenders and substance abusers. Frey provides a program that contains the flexibility to meet the needs of the offender and those of the facility. This treatment program provides tools for the time the offender is incarcerated and for his or her post-release treatment. Chapter topics include understanding and treating sexual abuse and substance abuse as a dual disorder; pre-adolescent dual-disorder group; family recovery program; substance-abuse track education program; sexual-abuse track education program; and aftercare. This resource, item #938-CT05, is available to ACA members for $36 and to nonmembers for $45.

The Double Jeopardy Workbook takes Frey's program and puts the treatment in the hands of the offender. Following the framework outlined in the counselor's guide, the author provides offenders with a hands-on approach to counseling. Topics addressed include adolescent-survivors' recovery group, adolescent-perpetrators' group, pre-adolescent recovery group, substance-abuse track education program, sexual-abuse track education program, family recovery program, aftercare and anger management skills. The workbook, #943-CT05, is available to ACA members for $24 and to nonmembers for $30.

Coming this fall, TRY -- Treatment Readiness for You: A Workbook for Youth at Risk examines the difficult transition from being a child to a teenager. In some cases, these individuals make the wrong choices. Wrong choices lead to further wrong choices. This vicious cycle does not have to happen. TRY--Youth at Risk helps young adults to successfully make the transition from childhood to adulthood. Chapter titles include: "Getting Ready for Change," "What's Going On? Why am I Here? How Did I Get Here?" "Ambivalence and Deciding to Change," "Helping You Overcome Ambivalence," "What Else Prevents Us From Making a Positive Change in Our Life?" and "Taking Steps to Change." This item, #968-CT05, is available to ACA members for $12 and to nonmembers for $15.
