AC LaRocco's got the skinny on low carbs with new whole wheat thin-crust pizza.

Clarence Scott belongs to Weight Watchers International, which has 1.5 million members worldwide. He also has his own pizza company, so he's got the right motivation and the right constituency to develop and market healthy pizzas.

Recently, AC LaRocco, Spokane, Washington, unveiled a line of whole wheat, thin crust pizzas said to bridge the gap between notoriously restricting low-carb diets and more lenient lifestyle-oriented programs, like Weight Watchers.

Authentic products catering to carb conscious consumers remain few and far between; without government regulations the "low carbohydrate" label is becoming increasingly cloaked with ambiguity. As during the "fat free" craze of the late 1980s, low carb labels can potentially mislead consumers by disguising products with high fat, calories and even carbohydrates as diet foods.

This can create confusion among consumers. "People become discouraged by conflicting information. They begin to think that there's no point in trying to improve their diet; what they're told to eat today turns out to be a problem tomorrow," complained Dr. Steven Pratt, a physician at Scripps Memorial Hospital in La Jolla, California and co-author of SuperFoods Rx.

Scott is trying to resolve that confusion with the new AC LaRocco line, which is said to combine taste and nutrition with low caloric content, minimal saturated fat and sodium, high fiber, and no trans-fatty acids. Weight Watchers groups have swarmed these low carb varieties upon the discovery that one serving is only worth two points on the Weight Watchers POINTS[R] system, a method where food is assigned a number of points based on its fat, fiber and caloric content.
