ABUSE BRINGS PRISON TIME; MAN GETS 9 YEARS FOR ATTACK ON GIRL.

Carlos Mendez, 32, pleaded no contest Oct. 15 to committing a lewd act upon a child and admitted an allegation of causing great bodily injury, officials said.

``The victim's mother said how terrible it was and that it ruined the family and her daughter's life,'' said Mendez's attorney, Deputy Public Defender public defender, governmental official who represents indigent persons accused of crime. Prosecutors also indicated at that time that they too wanted to void the case settlement. They had discovered later that the defendant had a prior criminal record under a different name, which included misdemeanor thefts and possession of marijuana and cocaine for sale, officials said.

After the case was sent back to Antelope Municipal Court, prosecutors filed a new case with the added allegation of great bodily injury, which carries a penalty of three years.

Mendez's daughter was away with her mother on a trip to Mexico, and Mendez invited the neighbor girl into his bedroom, where he committed the sexual acts, sheriff's deputies said.
