MINNEAPOLIS--(BUSINESS WIRE)--June 30, 2003

(Nasdaq:SSYS) Rapid prototyping systems maker, Stratasys, announced it has released ABSi plastic for use with its FDM (1) (Fused Deposition Modeling) See 3D printing.

(2) (Frequency Division Multiplexing) Transmitting multiple data signals simultaneously over a single wire by using multiple carriers, each having a unique center frequency.
Maxum.(TM) ABSi is expected to be used by automotive industry product designers, among others.

ABSi is available as a colorless plastic and also comes in translucent red, amber, or white. The plastic can be sterilized ster·il·ize

1. To make free from live bacteria or other microorganisms.

2.
via gamma radiation and ethylene oxide ethylene oxide Occupational medicine A gas used to sterilize medical supplies and other materials  (EtO) sterilization. ABSi is compatible with the soluble support product, WaterWorks,(TM) which saves time by dissolving model supports rather than requiring manual removal. ABSi has been available previously for some FDM systems.

In automotive applications, engineers have a frequent need to test prototypes such as tail lamps and other components that allow light transmission. FDM Maxum users are now able to perform such aesthetic tests with large, functional models. The Maxum is Stratasys' fastest machine with one of the industry's largest build envelopes.

Existing Maxum users will need to install the latest version of Stratasys Insight(TM) software (version 3.5 or later); no new hardware is needed. Users with service contracts will automatically receive the software version; those without a service contract should contact their local sales representative. Upgrading to ABSi and switching between materials are both simple steps, performed by the operator. ABSi-ready Maxums are currently shipping.

FDM models will not warp, shrink, or absorb moisture. Like all Stratasys equipment, the FDM Maxum requires no special facilities or venting and involves no hazardous materials or by-products. Stratasys systems typically represent the lowest total-cost-of-ownership among the major rapid prototyping suppliers.

Stratasys Inc, Minneapolis, manufactured 31% of all rapid prototyping systems installed worldwide last year: the highest percentage of any manufacturer, according to Wohlers Report 2003. The company patented the rapid prototyping process known as fused deposition modeling See 3D printing.  (FDM(R)). The process creates solid models directly from 3D CAD files using ABS plastic, polycarbonate A category of plastic materials used to make a myriad of products, including CDs and CD-ROMs. , PPSF PPSF Procurement/Production Status File  or other materials. Stratasys manufactures rapid prototyping systems for OEMs such as aerospace, automotive, defense, consumer, and medical product makers.

FDM Maxum, WaterWorks, and Insight are trademarks of, and FDM and Stratasys are registered trademarks of, Stratasys Inc.
