ABSENTEE BALLOTS UP FOR PRIMARY.

Byline: Sylvia L. Oliande Staff Writer

BURBANK - The number of requests for absentee ballots is up dramatically, but officials are unsure whether historically low turnout will rise overall for Tuesday's local primary election.

Absentee ballots were requested this year by about 5,000 of the 55,689 Burbank residents who are registered to vote. This was an increase from 3,000 requests in the 1999 city election, officials said.

City Clerk In the United States, a City Clerk is an elected or appointed official who is responsible as the official keeper of the municipal records. In some places, the Clerk may be known as the "Village Clerk" or "Town Clerk".  Judie Sarquiz said residents may increasingly be finding it easier to mail an absentee ballot than to make the trip to one of the city's 42 polling places. Voters also might be more attuned at·tune

, ``we'll take it where we get it,'' said Sarquiz, who is running unopposed for a second term.

Sarquiz is hoping for a higher overall turnout than in 1999, when just 15.9 percent of Burbank's voters cast ballots in both the primary and general elections. In 1997, 18.2 percent of registered voters cast ballots in the primary and 26.1 percent in the general election.

In addition to the city clerk, the ballot will list candidates for city treasurer, the City Council and the Burbank Unified School District A unified school district is a school district which includes both primary school (kindergarten through middle school or junior high) and high school (grades 9-12).
