, officials have enforced ``lock out'' programs requiring students late for class to obtain passes before they are allowed to return. Repeat offenders may do time in Saturday school to make up for lost class time.

``The issues can range from, I don't like my classes or they're in classes where they're completely lost because they're not placed properly, to there's someone around on campus I don't like,'' said Mary Chester, a William S William, crown prince of Germany

But while these severe tactics may deter the common offender, chronic ditching could be a symptom of deeper personal troubles, said Chester, who is scheduled to address the issue tonight at a workshop sponsored by Action, a parent and teen support group.

``Usually there's something in a child's life that's going on,'' she said. ``It's usually not about school. Something in the family triggers it,'' including a death at home, drug use or alcoholism.

parents who allow their children to skip classes could also aggravate the problem, Chester said.

``Once they develop those habits of not going to school, when the parents get the child the message that it's OK not to go to school, it becomes chronic,'' she said.

Detective Joe Dombrowski said his team has ticketed up to five truants a day, but there are probably many more who have gone unnoticed because they chose to stay indoors and out of sight.

``If they're not in school, they're doing something, and it's normally not good,'' he said. ``They're usually getting in some kind of trouble. If it's not alcohol or drug abuse, then it's daytime residential burglary.''

A truancy ticket can be an intimidating, yet successful, deterrent, Dombrowski said. A child usually faces up to the problem after being forced to appear with parents in court before a county Superior Court juvenile commissioner, he said.

The truancy discussion is scheduled tonight at 7 p.m. at the U Building at Saugus High School, 21900 Centurion Way. For information, call (661) 713-3006.
