Fund-raising romp: A race to benefit cancer research will be held Nov. 10 (Veteran's Day weekend) at West Los Angeles' Veterans Center.

The contest is one of a series of events held throughout the world in honor of Terry Fox, who, at age 18, was diagnosed with bone cancer and lost a leg to the disease. After his diagnosis, Fox sought to draw attention to the suffering of cancer patients by setting out to run 5,000 miles across Canada in the well-publicized ``Marathon of Hope The Marathon of Hope is a name given to the cross-Canada run undertaken by cancer patient Terry Fox in 1980. It is commemorated each year with the Terry Fox Run which is an international event that raises money for cancer research. .''

Though Fox completed just over half his goal before experiencing the cancer recurrence that took his life in 1981, his run led to ongoing efforts that have resulted in more than $144 million being raised to support cancer research.

General H. Norman Schwarzkopf will serve as honorary chairman of Los Angeles' Terry Fox Run. It will include a festival with entertainment, celebrity appearances, music, refreshments, children's activities and an expo with booths.

The run, which begins at 8 a.m., includes 10K and 5K races, a 5K walk and a children's fun run.

Prizes for top runners and teams will include weekend vacations, commemorative medals and trophies. Participants who raise money through pledges will receive gifts ranging from movie passes and sweat shirts to brunch for two.

All registered participants who turn in pledges on or before Nov. 10 will have the opportunity to win a five-night vacation with airfare to Maui.

Funds raised will support the John Wayne Center Institute, a cancer research and treatment facility in Santa Monica.

For details about the race, corporate sponsorship or expo booths, call the Terry Fox Run Hotline at (310) 582-7073.
