:ABL.) FastComm Communications Corp. and ABL Canada Inc. today released the results of compatibility tests conducted at both the ABL Video Labs in Montreal and FastComm headquarters here. The companies tested FastComm's popular EtherFRAD frame relay access device (communications) Frame Relay Access Device - (FRAD) Hardware and software that turns packets from TCP, SNA, IPX, etc into frames that can be sent over a Frame Relay wide area network.  and ABL's revolutionary VT2C Apollo video codec (1) A hardware circuit that converts analog video (NTSC, PAL, SECAM) into digital code and vice versa. The term may refer to only the A/D and D/A conversion, or it may include the compression technique for further reducing the signal (definition #2 below). See codec.  without a visible error.

The Apollo equipment, now commercially available, will be displayed and demonstrated in the FastComm exhibit, booth 8523, at Networld+Interop in the Atlanta Convention Center, 8-10 October 1997. "Video over frame relay A high-speed packet switching protocol used in wide area networks (WANs). Providing a granular service of up to DS3 speed (45 Mbps), it has become popular for LAN to LAN connections across remote distances, and services are offered by most major carriers.  is a huge step forward in frame relay functionality, and an area of increasing interest among large end user organizations," said Peter C. Madsen, FastComm president. "We are very pleased to be part of this progress toward expanded applications for frame relay and look forward to participating in the industry's growth." Our testing clearly demonstrates that ABL can deliver video over Frame Relay that is compatible with equipment installed in public networks Frame Networks or on customer premises" said William McKenzie, ABL's President and CEO (1) (Chief Executive Officer) The highest individual in command of an organization. Typically the president of the company, the CEO reports to the Chairman of the Board. . "This further cements our position as an acknowledged leader in the transmission of video at any bandwidth over any type of network". In the tests, the Apollo codec (1) (enCOder/DECoder) A hardware circuit that performs analog-to-digital conversion (ADC) and digital-to-analog (DAC) conversion. When analog signals are entered into a computer, cellphone or other device via a microphone or video source such as VHS tape or analog TV,  transmited world standard H.320 Video in Frame Relay packets through an on-board frame converter. Frame Relay addressing allows the device to route video to any address on a Frame Relay Network. The FastComm EtherFRADs accepted the codec's output, and switched the video frames across the frame relay transmission line. EtherFRADs are easily configured as frame relay concentrators and switches, in addition to handling a large number of LAN (Local Area Network) A communications network that serves users within a confined geographical area. The "clients" are the user's workstations typically running Windows, although Mac and Linux clients are also used. +Legacy(TM) protocols. Frame Relay users world wide employ this service at various transmission speeds, from 56 kbit/s to 2 Mbit/s and even 45 Mbit/s.  circuit- switched connections, and traditional packet-switched services like X.25. Frame relay allows users to multiplex video, voice, and data on the same Frame Relay access line to the network service, greatly reducing the costs and complexity of multiprotol or multi-application networks.
