ABITIBI-PRICE FORT WILLIAM DIVISION DEDICATES $3 MILLION TO THE ENVIRONMENT

THUNDER BAY, Ontario, Feb. 15 /PRNewswire/ -- The Fort William division of Abitibi-Price Inc. (NYSE: ABY) announced today that $3 million will be spent in 1993 to reduce water consumption at this newsprint mill.
The project will separate clean reusable water from the mill's effluent which requires treatment. By fall 1993, the wood room process water will be mostly recirculated and the associated bark lagoon will be closed. Water requiring treatment will be purified first through a reactor-type clarifier, followed by treatment in settling lagoons.
Brian Stevenson, general manager of the company's Fort William Division
said, These improvements are the first steps toward achieving compliance with new stringent federal regulations and are innovative approaches to reducing the total cost of compliance.'' On Dec. 1, 1992, the mill received a Transitional Authorization from the federal Department of Environment.
As significant as this project is, the principal benefit for the community is the commitment by the mill employees, union and management to high-profile on-going environmental improvement programs throughout the mill,'' added Mr. Stevenson.
Over the last few months, every staff and mill employee at the division has participated in an 8-hour environmental awareness training seminar developed and instructed by mill personnel. The course introduced employees to opportunities and responsibilities for environmental improvements in the mill, at home with their families and in the community of Thunder Bay.
