ABI Research Dissects RFID in 2006: the World Looking to North America, EPCglobal Looking to the Enterprise and Label Converters Looking for Position.

OYSTER BAY Oyster Bay, uninc. area (1990 pop. 6,687) of the Town of Oyster Bay, Nassau co., SE N.Y., on N Long Island, on Long Island Sound; settled 1653. It is chiefly residential. , N.Y. -- RFID (Radio Frequency IDentification) A data collection technology that uses electronic tags for storing data. The tag, also known as an "electronic label," "transponder" or "code plate," is made up of an RFID chip attached to an antenna. , one of the hot technologies of 2005, shows every sign of maintaining that status in 2006. The latest release of ABI Abi (ā`bī) [short for Abijah], in the Bible, King Hezekiah's mother.

Research's "RFID Research Service" highlights three trends in a market already experiencing rapid growth.

The RFID market is becoming increasingly global, but the United States United States, officially United States of America, republic (2005 est. pop. 295,734,000), 3,539,227 sq mi (9,166,598 sq km), North America. The United States is the world's third largest country in population and the fourth largest country in area.  remains a very important piece of real estate within it. Recent months have seen a number of RFID tag and reader vendors based outside the US working to establish footholds and strengthen their presences in North America. Hailing mostly from Japan, South Korea and Europe, they include companies such as Sato, KSW KSW Kuk Sool Won (Korean martial art)

Microtec, Rafsec, Siemens, Omron and Samsung, and they are refining their channel strategies for the region. According to ABI Research's director of RFID and ubiquitous networks, Erik Michielsen, this is generally a good thing: "Increased competition, and the infusion of international perspectives, will have a beneficial effect on the markets."

EPCglobal is, in 2006, trying to play a role in determining reader/network interface standards. But this is traditionally the territory of technology giants such as Microsoft, Oracle, SAP, BEA Systems, Sun Microsystems and IBM (International Business Machines Corporation, Armonk, NY, www.ibm.com) The world's largest computer company. IBM's product lines include the S/390 mainframes (zSeries), AS/400 midrange business systems (iSeries), RS/6000 workstations and servers (pSeries), Intel-based servers (xSeries) . "There is debate in the market whether by moving into the enterprise in this way, the organization is overextending itself," says Michielsen, "or whether this is something that will benefit the industry in general. ABI Research has an open mind on that issue."

Finally, 2006 is the year for label converters to jockey for position. There are dozens if not hundreds of companies that assemble labels and prepare them for mounting. They are urgently assessing their positioning and differentiation: should they choose high-volume, fast-moving consumer goods consumer goods

Any tangible commodity purchased by households to satisfy their wants and needs. Consumer goods may be durable or nondurable. Durable goods (e.g., autos, furniture, and appliances) have a significant life span, often defined as three years or more, and
? Temperature-sensitive grocery supply chain environments? Security-sensitive item-level pharmaceutical tracking? There are large market opportunities and niche opportunities, and how well these companies position themselves will have a great impact on their success.

The "RFID Research Service" is a subscription-based offering that includes regular market updates, research reports, industry and forecast databases, and an ABI Research Vendor Matrix. It examines RFID markets in great detail, with segmentation across product types, by region and by price. Further analysis includes qualitative insight and fire-year forecasting based on movement in key RFID vertical markets and their related application markets. Latest news and industry events are reported and analyzed in the broader context of the market.
