ABI Examines WiBro: Cross-Border Wireless Internet Services for Global Operators.

OYSTER BAY, N.Y. -- WiBro, the wireless broadband platform favored by South Korean operators and vendors, will become a prominent access technology not only for South Korean wireless Internet businesses but also in the global arena.

KT and SK Telecom have been aggressively preparing to launch WiBro commercial services early next year. WiBro vendors and operators in South Korea are already making progress faster than the WiMAX camp in terms of specification and market scale.

Conventional wisdom previously regarded WiBro as a local specification fulfilling Korean local conditions only, but it is gradually becoming accepted as a potential global specification, especially when WiBro provides interoperability with IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, New York, www.ieee.org) A membership organization that includes engineers, scientists and students in electronics and allied fields.  802.16e.

WiBro has been expanding its global presence. In July, the Japanese government, accepted WiBro along with mobile WiMAX as a next-generation broadband wireless standard candidate.  Research senior analyst Andy Bae, "With Korean users' high demands for wireless multimedia services via the Internet, and KT's aggressive 'WiBro as Next Growth Engine' plan to compete with SK Telecom-backed HSDPA (High Speed Downlink Packet Access) See HSPA. , WiBro in South Korea will be well-positioned." Nonetheless, terminal vendors should carefully examine users' preferences and market demands for applications, in accordance with service roadmaps.

ABI Research's recent study, WiBro in South Korea, examines WiBro's opportunities, service and technical features, dedicated applications and terminal trends. It draws comparisons with CDMA (Code Division Multiple Access) A method for transmitting simultaneous signals over a shared portion of the spectrum. The foremost application of CDMA is the digital cellular phone technology from QUALCOMM that operates in the 800 MHz band and 1.9 GHz PCS band.  1X/EV-DO, wireless LAN, DMB (Digital Multimedia Broadcasting) See mobile TV.  and HSDPA, and highlights lessons learned from Korean WiBro businesses. The study also suggests strategies for service deployment, and proposes a roadmap of terminals for global operators, chip and equipment vendors who are considering mobile WiMAX and WiBro in world markets. The study includes forecasts for subscribers, terminals, equipment, revenues and more.
